I keep getting a problem that occurs more and more often. One of my svchost.exe processes keeps using all available system resources so my CPU usage is at 98-100% all the time for about an hour... It mainly happens after a bootup but it would then go away in 3-4 mins. But if I leave my system idle for hours, it happens and takes a lot longer to go away.

A few times I've ended the process but then my sound would only half work and would glitch, so I'm guessing it helps control system volume?

Sum1 told me my system registry could need to be cleaned. I don't know how to do that and don't know a registry checking tool that I would trust.

Anyone have any idea on what this could be?

Could be malware had infected svchost. You can try cleaning the registry. I prefer CCleaner, get it here.

After you install it, click "Issues".
When prompted to backup the registry, click Yes.
Restart and see if it is still using alot of resources.

Just did it... fixed 297 issues... most were files that CCleaner said were left behind after a program was uninstalled... but there was a few suspicious looking ones and activeX controls...

Thanks for the great tip, this program seems to be really good. If I still have issues I'll post back.

    Thanks again. I appreciate it!

Edit> Restarted, but the svchost.exe is still doing it. But I was also able to use that program to clear about 670mb or crap data off my computer as well. So it was helpful, but my problem still remains...

    Download HijackThis.
Create a new folder in C: and extract HijackThis to the new folder.
Run a system scan and save a log file.
    Post the log here.

Or look yourself. When the log opens look at your processes(at the top part of the log) for a host file that has rearranged letters. For example: "s[bold]cv[/bold]host.exe". Or for any with "?" in them.

Edit: had to fix it. :)

    Nah, it's not jacked.

Is CPU usage high in safe mode?

I only have a few mins now so I'll try safe mode later... I did notice after having Task Manager up for a while to minitor when it happened most to give better detail that after it goes down and CPU usage goes to 0-2% that every time I start a program or do something svchost jumps to take all the CPU usage slowing down my loading ability. Then it slowly goes down and drops to 0% once the app/process is done loading, but climbs to steal my CPU power again when I start something different.

Example: I start a sony online game "Cosmic Rift" which is loaded thru a 3-game combined menu/program called "Launchpad".
As LP(Launchpad) loads, svc(svchost.exe) steals CPU usage. Then when LP is loaded and waiting for input, svc goes to 0%. When I choose to log in, svc steals again. Then settles till I choose my game, then when game zonelist is loaded, it drops. This is how it goes a good amount of the time. But this isn't a constant. Sometimes svc doesn't steal much usage... I'm at a loss of what the problem is...

Hm... I've never even tried to do that before. How do I turn that off? I don't use XP firewall anyways and I can update manually... and I don't care if the thing tells me I have anti-virus lol... its not needed at all.

    How would I disable this?

Wow I feel like a dumbass now... Thats the window I've been able to bring up a bunch of times, but I seem to have never seen the "change settings" link that was there... I'm blind. Just disabled it, will check and see if it works. Thanks for the help guys

I had this same issue, I think it has to do with automatic updates, the PC i was working on had never been updated so it had like 40-50 updates, when it finally finished, it quit happening. If your going to use automatic updates i suggest using the notify setting, and not the automatically download and install setting.

    gl hope this helps
