Okay, I need some help before I pull out my hair. =0) I have a Plextor PX712A burner drive and a Pioneer DVD106S rom drive. My problem is that when I insert a DVD into the Pioneer drive it will start to read it and then it will completely shut my system down. No reboots, total shut down every time. I have only had the problem a few times with the Plextor and that has usually been in the process of a burn (what a waste of disks!) I have checked everything in the case and believe it is all connected right. It seems that all the jumpers are set correctly and everything. Does anyone have any idea? Just for reference I have the Hard Drive set as master and the Pioneer as slave on the primary IDE and I have the Plextor set as master on the secondary IDE. Is there a different configuration I should try? Thanks in advance all!

    The set up sound good.
I'm a little confused about the post though? It does this when playing or burning DVD's? or both?

If it happens while burning then you may just need to update all your drives/firmwae. Also be sure all drives are set to DMA mode http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/DMA.html

Has it always done this or just recently?
If it is happening during playing you might want to be sure your Video card driver is up to date and that the resolution isn't set to high while playing DVD's.

Your system could also be running Hot!! this is ushually what would cause a shut down. Open that baby up and make sure all your fans are cleaned out and working.

If all that fails then you could try just reloading your operating system. You may have bad or corupt files that need fix'n. :)

It does this both. It does it every time I try to play a movie in my DVD-Rom. It only shuts down every 2-3 times when I burn a DVD. It will read the DVD onto the hard drive but about 5 minutes or so into the burn the computer shuts down.

    All are set!

It just started doing this recently. I did update my video driver (there was an available update). What resolution should I set my monitor at for viewing DVD's?

System running cool enough. I had a problem with it locking up a couple months ago and found that was from overheating so I have added a larger fan and an additional one. Plus, made sure they were all cleaned out the other day! =0)

Well, I will try again now to burn and view now that I have updated the video card driver. Let me know about the resolution so I can check that. If none of these things work I guess I will have to reload the OS. <eek> I will be trying everything to avoid that though. Thank you for your help!

To test just to see if this is the probem try your video card on 16 colors and 800x600 resolution.

Before you rlode the whole operating system you could just try reloading your DVD playing software and burning software first.
