I am making a rather unsuccesful attempt at flashing an image onto my dbox2. I took the ip address from the dbox and entered it into smartftp and ended up with this message:

    [17:23:17] SmartFTP v2.0.997.4
    [17:23:18] Resolving host name "192.168.1.4"
    [17:23:18] Connecting to 192.168.1.4 Port: 21
    [17:23:18] Connected to 192.168.1.4.
[17:23:39] An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine.
    [17:23:39] Server closed connection
[17:23:39] Cannot login waiting to retry (30s)..

I've been reading up on the net and it seems that I have to modify the ip address of the dbox to have a tcpip address in the same subnet as my pc??

i'm starting to get really confused.

a)where on my pc do i find the info i need
b)what do i change on my dbox

i might have to go back to reading books lol

a subnet classifys a range of IP addresses

    for example to range 192.168.1.x (x = 0 to 255)

    would have the subnet 255.255.255.0

try setting the subnet to 255.255.255.0 on both the pc and the dbox.

you will also need to make sure the first 3 octets must be the same (an octet is the numbers seperated by decimal places.)

    hope this helps.

p.s. sorry that im not that good at explaining things

If your ip on your dbox is 192.168.1.4 then set your ip on your pc to 192.168.1.5 , subnetmasks both the same 255.255.255.0 and try keeping your default gateways both at 192.168.0.1. then try your ftp , you should recieve a connection then

    Good luck

    Ok I'm confused

If my pc i.p address is 192.168.1.4 can I just set my dbox to 192.168.1.4?

I don't know how to change the i.p address on my pc.

once both i.p addresses are set will that be all i need to do?

Then if I use FTP the two should be able to talk right?

imagine IP addresses like street addresses

both computers are in the location with the first 3 octets.

e.g. the street name is 192.168.0.xxx
    the house number is xxx.xxx.xxx.1

so the full address would be 192.168.0.1
another house in the street would be 192.168.0.2

    etc.

you cannpot have the same house number for more than one house in the same street.

    comprendre?

Spot on sandy, but remember mate always make your computer the highest of 2 . Change your comp to 192.168.0.101 - to do this goto your connections click what ever connection your gonna use, right click- properties - double click internet protocol - select " use following ip adress " instead of automaticly. Then set it to 192.168.0.101. Now set your dbox2 to 192.168.0.100

Or just use DBOX2 Image-Flashing-Assistent no need to set i.p.
