Newsgroups tend to max out your connection speed. If not, they get close. When you say you achieve 1.5 are you taking megaBITS of megaBytes? I download pretty steady around 10 MegaBits per second and my connection speed is 10 MegaBits a second. Beats the pants off of a torrent, :).

BUT, 10 MegaBits is only 1.29 megabytes per second. So if you are getting 1.5 megabytes....wow.

oh yeah... on private trackers if it's a new torrent, it max out at 1.5 MB/sec Mbytes so around 12 Mb/sec. I think if I had an even faster connection it would go even faster. There are a lot of people on private trackers that use seedboxes which put together is ridiculous.

    Try Xbox -Sky

I'm gonna have to give it a try. How fast is your connection? I have 10 Mbits so I max mine out, and I know if I got higher it would be too.

Ok, so i went with usenetserver.com it's $10 a month, 20 max connections and unlimited with SSL. I'm using Grabit as a read and made an account at NZBmatrix.com
I just want to thank everybody that posted for their help.
It all looked a little confusing at first but 2 minutes into it and I got it down.
    Thanx again

    @BurningAs
Tried to go to xbox sky but its in a different language? I thought it was my browser messing up but thats the only site it does that in... Does it do that to you?

I love my newsgroups. Makes downloading so much easier and quicker. But because it does max out your connection, its nice to do it when you know you aren't going to be on the computer. Just load a bunch of nzb's and let it go.

I use Grab It but I will say that is one major benefit to NewzBin. It had a speed limit button that you could set at whatever speed you want and when you hit it the downloading would slow to that speed. Very useful if you wanted to be downloading and be on the computer, that way your surfing wouldn't be slow. Then when you were done you could hit the button again and it would be full speed again.

I switched to using Usenet a couple of years ago. It has several advantages over torrents: -

    1. I always max out my connection straight away and for the whole duration of the download.
    2. I don't have to seed files for days to try and maintain a ratio on a private tracker (cos public trackers are usually always shite). You don't have to share or upload anything at all.
    3. Torrents tend to die as time goes on and fewer people are seeding. On Usenet, the speed is the same no matter how long the file has been on the server, and the retention (how long binaries stay on the server before being deleted) on GigaNews is currently 310 days and rising.
    4. It's more secure, especially if you use SSL.

The only advantage torrents have over newsgroups is that they're free, although as people have pointed out, Usenet access doesn't have to cost a fortune and some ISPs even offer it for free (although it can be rather limited compared to the paid for options), and there are specialist torrent sites out there that cater to specific needs and you may not find those files on Usenet. For general games/music/movies/TV show/software needs, I'd say Usenet covers 90% of what I want, and the rest I get from blogs or torrents, so it's well worth paying for given the advantages it has.

one other thing I would add is that when i am grabbing nzb's off of newzbin and i look at comments, it always seems like alot of people say that giganews has broken rar's and they had to quickpar them. And in my opinion it alyways seems like thge giganews users that have probs. Also for those of you that want newsleecher, umm... I dunno if this ever occured to you, but it is on the newsgroups. :p

alright i've been downloading like a mad man but i've come across a lot of trojan infected material. My question is what groups can I trust to release safe content only? eg. Group: alt.binaries.boneless
what groups do the top private torrent trackers get all their content from? I appreciate the help.
    Thanx

not sure about which groups... I have been using newsgroups for a long time and have never once downloaded a virus from them. And I usually have stuff downloading 24/7.

If you are downloading anything with a crack or a activation fix all AV's will see that as a virus.

yea i know about AV's detecting cracks as trojans but I am getting positive hits on apps without cracks. Infected install apps. Nowadays you can hide malware in almost any file types, even videos. Just dont want to end up in somebody's botnet.

I can honestly say I've never had one. I'll look and see what groups I am normally downloading from.

There are no real good groups without viruses. I myself haven't came across any. My advice is to always pay attention to file size and if it has comments. If there is more than one version of what I want and one has comments, I read then download. This way I can see from others that have downloaded if it is infected or not.

I have been doing that and all I see is a lot of bitching and moaning about incomplete files, why do newsgroups seem to have such a big problem with that? I wouls have that problem with torrents like 1/250

The incomplete files are normally from people with low retention trying to download files that have been posted forever.

Like with Astraweb, my retention is 270 days. This means I can download anything that has been posted in the last 270 days with very little risk of corrupt files or anything. If I try to download something that was posted 400 days ago, I will get a lot of incomplete files.

People just don't pay attention to post date and think it should download fine.

I hate to ask this here but I honestly dont know how the newsgroups work and would like to see if someone here can help me out. I subscriped to Usenet Newsgroup and 3 others (the other 3 where one time Fees) can soemone help me out getting setup because when I use Grabit the downloads never seem to happen the all fail.

Both Torrents and NG's have the Pros and Cons i have used both and this is my take if you will...

    Torrents
Public Trackers suck you need to find a good private one which can be hard at the moment since most are always full and are not giving out invitations...on a private tracker you have to keep a good ratio (upload what you download) because thats how torrents work in the first place. depending on the site you can always request older games to be re-uploaded and so On, Also Depending on the Site is your download speed most private trackers will max you out...but that also depends on how many leechers to seeders.

    NewsGroups
Not much to say....They cost money not much but that im my mind is the only drawback they also take some getting used to and some computer know how (IRC,new Programs etc.)
the plus side is they always max your speed out.

right now i have been sticking with my torrents and dropped my newsgroup a while back but i remember only paying like 13$ a month for unlimited downloads.
    http://www.astraweb.com/

so both work difference with torrents there free but you have to find a good private tracker and share. Newsgroups you have to pay but no sharing and awesome speed..
also i see a lot of people paying for multiple things i dont really know the advantage but i used altbinz to download and thats free so i was paying 13$ for totally unlimted downloads.

for games abgx.net is where you will wanna go...
