I currently have an Asus P7P55D motherboard with an Intel core i-5 cpu (750 @ 2.67 GHz, 2668 Mhz 4 cores). Also have 4 gb of ram and a 120gb kingston hyper x SSD drive.

I have a very long list of movies to encode to .mp4 using Vidcoder. Currently it is taking anywhere from 3.5 to 6.5 hours to encode per movie. I am hoping to get these times reduced significantly if possible. I figured it is time to upgrade this machine anyway so I am looking to get a new CPU and maybe some more RAM. What would be some good i-7 cpu's that can fit in my motherboard? I might just get a new motherboard anyway too if that makes a difference. Thanks for any suggestions.

Your motherboard supports Intel LGA1156 Platform so you may want to upgrade to a new motherboard that supports the latest Intel cpu and 8gb ram is recommended.

Should I go for a 2011 socket type?

If you have the money Intel Core i7-4930K 3.40GHz (Ivy Bridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail would be a good choice although the Intel Core i7-3770 3.40GHz (Ivy Bridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail is a lot cheaper if you are on a budget.
