I am getting an error message that I have never seen before and cannot figure out.

"cannot initialize directsound" and that renders the program unusable because it will not allow me to do any editing to the video clip.

I have used the software befoe but, just did a clean install of Windows and reinstalled everything. Now I am getting this message.

    Any ideas guys?

When you did a clean install, you probably erased the codec or directshow filter needed to decode the particular audio format used in that file.
Use a program like Gspot to check if the appropriate filter/codec is on your system, and if it is not, reinstall via the Nimo codec pack or a similar app.

There are known compatiblility issues with certain software in Windows Xp/2000 which can cause these sort of errors. If you have not recieved this error before, remove the last installed piece of software.
