I realise this is a ps2 forum but was wondering if anyone could help?
I have downloaded some ps1 games which are bin/cue files, then burned with alcohol 120% only to find they only play on certain machines.

I have 2 modded playstations, the games will play on one but not the other?
Is it something to do with the modchip that's been installed?
How can I get round this? Do I need to burn the disc differently?

any help/advice would be much appreciated...

Well, I don't see why It would work on one and not the other.. some games are built with piracy prevention so they can detect modchips and refuse to play..
The laser may also be an issue and some tend to wear out especially with backups, this could quite possibly be your problem.
I reccomend you burn at a slow speed.. no-more than 16x I would say. Try burning at a slower speed.. or maybe replacing your PS1 laser? Keep us informed won't you? ;)

the ps1 is very new & hardly new though I don't know what modchip has been fitted?
It's the smaller ps1 I have that won't play downloaded copies, backup copies I've made with alcohol 120 etc all work?
I have unzipped the downloaded files which are mostly bin/cue files & then tried but don't work on this machine?
When I load the game it brings up the memory card/cd player screen?

    Ah I get ya.

I myself have had those problems, all you need to do is simply restart your console until they play. Count how many times you do it, if it reaches thirty.. it aint gonna play im 'fraid. At least this is what I had to do neways. Hope this helps ;)
