Hey all I'm brand new to the whole dvd burning thing. When I try to burn my dvds I get all sorts of errors:
    1. Session fixation error
    2. Could not perform end of Disc-at-once
    3. Burn process failed

I am using TDK DVD+R's and my burner is a philips DVD+-RW DVD8631

I've actually been able to burn about 3 minutes of a DVD but it always shows these errors. Can anyone shed some light on this matter. Thanks in advance!

The simplest thing to do is perhaps first try DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter, both free programs downloadble from this site. If they work, then forget about Nero. If the same errors keep coming up, then probably media problem.
By the way, Nero does not handle the CSS and region code problem by itself. So have you got those covered?

scf_au thanks for the help. I will try DVD Shrink tonight. I'm using DVD Cloner II to copy the movies to my hard drive and then using Nero to burn them to the DVD+R's. I'm pretty sure that DVD Cloner II handles the CSS but not sure about the region code.
Thanks again for the assistance, I will let you know if it works!

You're probably trying to burn at too fast a speed at 16x:

    "6:33:26 PM #19 Phase 36 File APIProgress.cpp, Line 273
    Burn process started at 16x (22,160 KB/s)"

Many people have reported problems when they go beyond 4x. I never burn over 2x (but have had 100% success).

Try burning at 2-4x with a rewritable to see how it goes.

    Good luck!

PHILIPS DVD+-RW DVD8631 atapi Port 0 ID 1 DMA: Off

Would help a bunch if you set your Burner to DMA mode instead of PIO mode :)

Also burning at x16 you are asking for nothing but trouble. There probably isnt a DVD player out there that could read the movie even if you were sucessful at burning that fast. Slow it down to x4

    @cchapell

According to your log, the DMA is off for your burner.
This maybe where your problem lies, especially as you are trying to burn at 'warp' speed.

    Points to review:

    Goto device manager
    Click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Locate the channel that your burner is on
    and go into advanced settings.
You should see that your burner is set to PIO mode
Change the transfer mode to DMA if available.

If you cannot change it, uninstall the Burner OR the IDE controller (right click on title) it is on and reboot, windows should reinstall it, and you should have returned to a DMA mode.

Then attempt to burn at 4x (as bbmayo sugested) and it should go through nicely.................

Also, in your log file it shows an error message of 'Callibration area full'. Before any write operation can occur, and during a write, the recorder does 15 calibration tests in the PMA area of the Disc, to determine the best power to be used at any given point on the disc. Meaning the begining, and throughout the write as what was good at the begining may not be good in the middle or end depending on how the dye was layed out.

This section where the calibration tests are written too are in the PMA or Program Memory Area, and this should never become 'Full'. Or to be exact, it would require a large number of small write operations to fill this area up, and is not likely to occur or even possible. So it can be a firmware issue, but in my experience it's always been a media issue.

Have you tried more than one brand of DVD media? You could just have a bad batch.

I have been a very similar problem with my Phillips DVD+-RW DVD8631 in my new Dimension 4700. I wanted to back up my DVD's so I bought DVD ClonerII. This software does not show or detect my DVD RW as a "target" drive. Their tech support stated that I should burn to the hard drive then use Nero 6 to burn to the DVD RW.
I tried this and Nero 6 stated that the DVD in the RW drive had to be a dual layer DVD to write. I did purchase a DL disc but and it worked, but these DVD's are very cost prohibitive.
With the DVD ClonerII I made sure that the software was not copying to the "D9" format. All the DVD's I have copied to my hard drive are under the 4.7 Gb limit. So it looks like DVD Cloner II is copying it right to the hard drive.
Their tech support stated to make sure not to copy the D9 format which I have not done.
I am using TDK DVD+R media.
    Any suggestions?

Hey smarty23 I started this thread and here is what worked for me. I have the same burner, the same software and was using the same TDK DVD+Rs. First I uninstalled nero and the sonic burning software that came with the PC. Secondly I switched to Fuji DVD-Rs. Once I did this, DVD Cloner II was able to see the target drive and the source. My back-ups have been flawless! Hope this helps!!! Good luck.

cchapell - I'll try that tonight, thanks. It has been frustrating between Dell and DVD ClonerII tech support. I'll get back to you if it works. Thanks again.

Success! In a nut shell, the Phillips DVD+-RW DVD8631 did not like the TDK+R dvd's. I assume it was this conflict that signaled Nero to prompt me to use the DL DVD's. I did uninstall the Sonic software but not the Nero software.
Using the Fuji DVD-R disc's it writes with ease (with Nero). I still have my original problem with DVD ClonerII not showing a target drive for the writer. BUT it is working so I am happy now.

    Thanks again cchapell.

hi guys...consider me to be total computer novice...just bought the dell 3000 inspiron desktop. Trying to burn data DVD's via sonic and get the following error "Please insert a blank or rewritable disc into the philips DVDRW8631".

I have mutliple brands and multiple types both + and - but nothing seems to work...have also set my cd speed to 2x.

    any advise.

You may want to try and format the DVD first and then burn to it. If you insert the DVD into the drive and then click on the drive in Windows explorer, right click and select 'Format'. If that does not work try Nero or Roxio software. The Sonic software I had a lot of trouble with, it has long since been removed from my machine.
