"Unspecified target error" while burning a DVD-R. Burns OK with a DVD+R

Hi there,

I have a Pentium Centrino 1.6 in my laptop and a DVD burner MATSHITA UJ-831D. It supports burning DVDs of type DVD-R or DVD+R. I also have nero 6.6, and I'm trying to burn several xvid files in a single DVD-R.

When trying to burn the compilation to a DVD-R, nero always fails near the last file (movie). I get an "unspecified target error". I tried to use a DVD+RW of the same brand (sentinel) to burn the same compilation, and everything went rigth, but I just can´t seem to burn it on a DVD-R. I've tried several times, but always nero failed with the same message. I also tried to simulate the compilation in a DVD-R before I burn the DVD, and after the simulation was finished with no errors, I burned the compilation and again received the same error. I also tried another burner app called "NTI CD & DVD-Maker" but again, It failed with same error message.

Your problem is that you have a DVD Combo drive.

That means you can read but not write DVD's.

You can read and write CD's.

As such you will not be able to burn DVD's only Cd's.

tanx for replying, but I'm pretty sure that I can burn DVDs. Also as I stated in my earlier message I have already burned the same compilation in a DVD+RW and everything was alrigth, the problem is in burning DVD-R. When burning DVD-R, almost at the end I receive an "unspecified target error". But when simulating the compilation I get no errors.

The information

is from my phisic device MATSHITA UJ-831D that can read CD or DVDs and burn CD or DVD-R or DVD+R. The device AXV CD/DVD-ROM F: CDRom1 is a virtual device mounted by Alchool 100%. But when burning I choose the MATSHITA UJ-831D, the physic device that can actually burn DVDs or CDs.

 

Sorry - I may have been a bit hasty.

Did a quick google search and could not find much on the model and what I did, it looked like a combo drive.

Perhaps you need to look at some different type media - Sentinel is not a well known brand and most members on these forums suggest Ritek, Verbatim, TY's or Maxwell.

Quality media does make a difference. Might be also worthwhile give + format a try and see how it goes. Different brand burner react differently to media types.

The weird part is that I can burn the exact same compilation in a DVD+RW of the same brand "Sentinel". What's the problem with sentinel's DVD-R?? The brand and the compilation is the same.

I did some search in google, and found several people with the same error with different brand DVD-R, different versions of Nero (or other app) and diferent burning devices. None of those people found solutions. Except for one. Some guy posted in a forum that the burner "gets tired" and reply an error message "unspecified target error". So he shuted down his laptop for an hour and let it rest, and after that he burned the same compilation in a DVD-R with no problems.

I'll try that too.

If anyone has any ideas please, really please, let me know.

I have the same DVD/RW Matshita UJ-831D and I can burn a DVD+R but when I tried to burn a DVD-R,Nero always fails at 1% "callibrati error".

Calibration Error is a media specific error. Try a different brand and get different results.

Ok I've tried a different brand (TDK instead of Sentinel), but it didn't workout. The same compilation (6 xvid movies of about 4.3 Gb) and the same error burning the DVD. At the last movie got the error "unspecified target error". Ok if it's "unspecified" how the hell should I know what's going on????

From the compilation I've tried to burn, I can see the first 5 movies nicelly, with no problems. But the last movie (the last file) seems to be corrupt (where I've received the error). I can't understand!!! My DVD says it's a "DVD-Dual (support DVD-+RW)". I've already burn successfully DVD+RW or CD-R, but I just can't burn a DVD-R!

Please does anyone know what kind of error this is? Or what kind of solution can i have??

Just in case use your Nero Info Tool to look and see exactly what your drive specs are, including which media it can handle.

Yes I saw that.

The question is.
How do you know that firmware only works for the 831S and not the 831D?

It is hard to find any good information about either drive, but the specs seem to be the same.
The filename uj831b104.exe doesn't seem to give any indication that it is for one drive and not the other.

I guess it would be up to a adventurous person to find out for sure.

 

cause i had the same drive, with same problems, and i've already tried to install that, doesn´t work,
it says it couldn't find the device, and don't install firmware

 

a repeated thing I've seen is is works with DVD+R but not DVD-R or vice versa??? If thats the case why not just buy DVD+R or whatever does work!! Although I did run across the same problem you describing, what I did was dumb nero and use Shrink and Decrypt, have not had trouble til about 3 days ago trying to backup forgotton, but thats a different story for a different forum almost there though!! Also make sure media is good(blank DVD) I think you allready did though!! I use Fugifilm DVD+R 4x!! I know its not the best but it works for me!! Plus I can get 25 for $10.00 for about 1 more week!(Great Sale) Hope you get it fingered out!! But if it was me drop nero and use decypt and shrink!! Both free and widely used

lawndog: I wantto burn DVD-R because my device "says" it can burn DVD-R and not only DVD+R, so I bougth a pack of DVD-R and didn't want to throw it in a trash can! Either way I'm gonna try shrink and decrypt to see how it handles my problem.
