I'm going to buy an XBox 360 - most likely one of the slim versions. I'd like to flash the DVD drive, if I can find a version that accepts it (i.e. Slim LiteOn 9504, 0272 , 0225 , 0401 , 1071).

My question is; does the XBox console firmware/dashboard update version matter? For instance, would it only work on version 2.0.14**** and prior versions or would version 2.0.1.6***** also work? I ask because I know mod chips (or at least the chip the electronics market near me uses) only work on earlier versions than 2.0.14.

Can it be flashed with just a Sata cable, or do I need to buy anything else?

Can I play original XBox games of a different region than the console on Live?

Google tells me to update to the latest dashboard version for unspecified reasons - and also not to update past a certain version for unspecified reasons. It tells me both that I just need a SATA cable for any version and that for later versions I need special hardware.

The stickies say to update to the latest version - which was 2.0.14699.0 at the time of writing - I also know thats the last Dashboard version which worked with mod chip, so I dont know if versions after that also stopped or changed DVD Flashing.

The technicians at the local computer market just tell me "DVD Flashing is bad" and that I cant use Live even with original games. They sell mod chips so I cant trust them though.

Nowhere says anything about original games, different regions and using Live as far as I can see. The only things I found about Live are "Dont use it ever", "Okay with original games only", "Theres some way to make patched backups of games you own work" and complaining that people cant play games they dont own on Live.

This is why Im asking - specifically with an XBox Slim - can I do it with just a SATA cable? Does the dashboard version matter? Can I play original XBox games of a different region than the console on Live?
