I have installed a magic 3.1 on v4 with gap. All seems well its plays orgianl games and back up cdrs. But will not play back up dvd-r's yet? All the soldering seems to have went well. Hopefully its just a cleaning or wrong lead in the wrong place.
Any thought would be nice. thanks alot all

also I tested it with a dvd-r that does work in other ps2's with 3.1 chips in them. So I'm sure that it not a media problem.

Have your original Ps2 games been DVD Games? If not then it could be a laser problem. I had the same problems with my V4 (neo dvd key) where it wouldn't play any DVD movies, games, etc. Replaced the laser and so far everything boots fine.

My laser worked fine until i tried to play a dvd-r. The old one still plays cd everything, but original dvd's and games didn't read since i tried a dvd-r. I guess it was the last straw. Also, cheap dvd-r media can be stressful to the laser. Believe me, I went through all the possible scenarios before installing a new laser.

Here's a cheap site for a new laser

    Cleaned the laser
    Replaced the internal battery
Took Ps2 apart and reconnected ribbon

None of these methods worked. You can give them a try, but overall you're prob gonna end up spending 50 bucks for a replacement laser.

OK thanks for your help and time.hereis the update.

    The ps4 w/gap
    does play-cdr-bu
does play-orginal dvd rom games and movies

does not play dvd-r(i have got devil my cry on imation media to work once, aslo twisted medal black worked once is well. I can't get them to work again.

Could this be the laser i am sarting to lean towards that as the problem?

couldn't it be the ground or 5vt leads are not connecting well or a data lead did not wet properly?

I hoping for my freinds sake its not the laser.

I have misunderstood your specifics. Your original DVD games and movies are working. This was not the case with me so I can not be sure if it is the laser. Version 4 Ps2's don't have the same dvd-r compatibilities as many other ps2 versions and dvd players. For example, I have DVDPro media that works perfectly on my standalone toshiba and my friends V4 Ps2, but does not work on my v4. I would recommend trying a sampler pack from meritline or supermedia to see what works for you. I am using a powermac g4 and neo 2.5, and so far I have had success with an optodisc dvd-r movie, an apple media ps2 game (vice city), and a Be-All from Samsung ps2 game (NFL Blitz 2003).

yeah i don't thinbk this one is a media problem
It either has to be a soldering joint or the laser needs ajusting. Anymore opions would be nice.
