I have got this ripping thing down to a science and thanks to all of you, I haven't had any major problems. Now I would like to add chapters to my vcd's. Can somebody tell me the best way to do that? I use smartripper, dvd2avi and tmpgenc. Also, can you add chapters to mpegs?
    Thanks for your help!

Most dvd burning software would have chapter options, such as Pinnacle impression dvd pro and ulead dvd woprkshop (2).

I already have PowerDirectorPro and Sonic MyDVD for authoring DVDs, so I just want a free utility to add chapter points. Probably bought the wrong stuff :(

im pretty sure that what Dela refers to as DVD burning software is actually called video authoring software. This is a really decent question, after all who wants to scan forward in 16x through out the whole movie, forget about it. all the authoring software mentioned above is fully capable of adding chapter points and also makes for a decent video editing platform. Basic steps are: edit the video; here you will create inpoint & outpoint, add chapter points. next create the menu; make a basic menu or one with full motion, add background music create buttons. Then once your all finished you’ll be able to preview by simulating the project as it would look on your TV. then create DVD disc or DVD folder "Video_ts" or a disk image.

Ps. This is one topic that’s not discussed enough in this forum

Perhaps I should give more details.

DVDx 2.1 (www.labdv.com) is free and fantastic for ripping 2-layer DVDs to a smaller mpg file for authoring onto a 1-layer DVD (for backup of course!), but it cannot set the chapter points (yet).

Cyberlink’s “Power Director Pro 2.5” is great for capture and editing your movies. You can cut and join your movies, add fades, titles, PIP, effects and lots more, but it also doesn’t set chapter points. After making the mpg (or avi) you can use their wizard to build static menus and burn the DVD. This wizard will allow you to add chapters, but its crap! You have to navigate over the whole movie again which isn’t easy. Cyberlink need to give their wizard some more magic.

Once I got the movie made (as an MPEG2), I prefer to use Sonics MyDVD to author the DVD and make menus (with motion backgrounds and buttons). However, MyDVD cannot add chapters to a movie except while its being captured. Then you have to sit there pressing the space bar. If you miss a key chapter point, you’ll have to start again! This does add the chapter points to the captured mpg file, but these chapter points only seem to be usable by MyDVD, as WinDVD and PowerDVD movie players don’t see them.

    So my questions are really:

    1) Where are chapter points stored?

    2) Is it possible to take a VIDEO_TS folder and edit a BUB or IFO file to add chapter points at known times to a movie, before burning it to DVD?

    3) What good software is there for authoring DVDs, that take mpg files to make titles (movies), can add chapter points, good menus (with motion) … oh yes … and add slide shows with background music?

I probably have enough authoring software (Power Director Pro, Sonic myDVD, InterVideo's WinCoder, Nero5, etc), so I'm not going to shed out any more cash just to add chapter points, unless there's other real benefits.

If anyone knows a free utility for adding chapters to a VIDEO_TS fileset please post a reply.
