I want to delete part of a large avi file; when try to open it in virtualdub, get this message:
"couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd'(unknown)"

    Would appreciate any help.
    Thanks

Sounds like the correct video codec for your AVI file has not been installed and registered to your system.
Can you play the AVI in Windows, using WMP?
"format 'dvsd'(unknown)" is a new one on me - and it seems VDub doesn't recognise it either...
Get yourself GSpot, and it will identify your AVI with all sorts of technical information about it.
Find out what you can, and we will determine if VDub or maybe something else will do what you require.
Probably you should remove your EMail address ASAP, it is against forum rules (and, mail harvesting bots will flood your inbox with advanced techniques for penis enlargement).
    Regards
