I have been trying to convert a large avi file. I am using the high quality option, so my file comes out to 8.gb.
I tried vision express and got this message (your project currently requires more disc space than available on the selected drive.) I have plenty of hard drive space, and i am copying to hard drive. I also get this message when i am about to write to hard drive.(recording this project may be unsuccesful and could produce unusable results. do you want to still start recording.) and after it is done to hard drive it is only 1.88gb far below the size it should be.

I was advised to use a dual layer disc but i am not sure if dual layer will play alright on a standalone dvd player.
Can you play dual layer on a stand alone dvd player.
    Any help appreciated.

Yes dual layer disks play back fine on most standalone dvd players as long as the disk is +R DL format and is booktyped as DVD-ROM.

Something seems wrong. What version of Nero are you using. Post the Nerovision log if you have it.

I think to get any decent results, you'll want to upgrade to Nero 6.6.0.18. It's the most stable and bug free version of Nero 6.

To change any version of Nero.
    - Uninstall the current version taking care to write down your Nero serial number.
    - After uninstalling, run the appropriate Nero Clean Tool for the version being uninstalled, in this case, the Nero 6 Clean Tool.

    - Install the new version. Nero 6.6.0.18 is available in two packages here:

    Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
    Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

I wouldn't try burning a DL disk with Nero. ImgBurn is a much better choice overall for burning DL disks. You can either output an image file from Nero with the Image Recorder or a folder of video files. The image file saves steps later.

There are guides at the forum at the site above.

AVIs aren't really high in video quality to begin with so it doesn't make a lot of sense to spend dollars on a DL disk. One might as well compress the output to fit on a SL disk or just divide the content between a couple of disks.

You might also want to download and try ConvertXtoDVD. In trial version mode, it watermarks its output, but is a better converter overall than Nero.
