VOB files too large

    Hi!

When I ripped Armageddon with SmartRipper the VOB files totaled to 6GB or so. Since it fit on the DVD, why is it larger on my harddisk? Is there a way to compress them?

    Thanks in advance! :)

use dvd shrink to or dvd2one to compress it down
i find that dvd2one is the easiest to use. I think they might be some guides on this forum for either.
    have fun

    Thanks for the prompt reply!

I had a look at these tools, do they allow you to compress the VOB files? For example, in my Armageddon folder, i have

    Armageddon_1.vob

    through

    Armageddon 27.vob

In nero, when I add these, I get way over the limit. these programs will help?

And why, if they fit on the Armageddon DVD, are they larger on my disk, do you know?
    Thanks again!

Ok, I read up a bit on it and see now that their DVDs are DVD-9.

I wouldn't mind encoding it to an MPEG or AVI, but is there a program that will do this for me AND keep the chapters? The 27 VOB files are each a seperate chapter and I'd like to keep the ability to browse chapters on the final DVD (encoding with Dr DivX outputs a nice small 1.7GB file, but it is only one file, not seperate chapters).

(Hi there djfm, I just came from your thread :D )

    Tasty,

To answer your question, yes, it fit on the original DVD but that was written in 2 layers - we can only write in a single layer so that's why we need to compress it -

djfm gave you 2 excellent programs to do the job - which would be good for you ?

    OK, here's a break down -

    DVD2One = $$$$

    DVD Shrink = FREE !!

    (Putting on my "Swami Hat")

OK, Now I know which one you want - Here ya go -

    Shrink download - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm
    Shrink Guide -
    http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/dvd_shrink_3.htm

First, you need to create a folder and name it VIDEO_TS written just like that, in CAP's. Place ALL of the files that you got from SmartRipper and put them in that folder.
Open Shrink, select "Open Files" and use the "Browser" to select the location of your files.

You'll need this later - download it, DVD Shrink will know what to do with it -

BTW, Welcome to the Club :D

    Pete

HINT: Don't ever use SmartRipper again, just open the disk using DVD Shrink - saves ever so much time -

If I rename armageddon_0.ifo to VIDEO_TS.ifo, I get an "invalid DVD navigation structure".

    Any more ideas?

Seem you were busy typing as I was typing -

You could have used SmartRipper in the first place to rip to MPEG instead of VOB's then TMPGEnc DVD Author to go from MPEG to VOB's - would that do what you want ? It's not something I do, that's why I'm not totally sure -

Slow down, I type with 2 sticks :)

I said to create that folder, not knowing you had it - it is necessary to burn it with Nero to disc - didn't know you were not finshed playing with it -

No, sorry, all I have now is the VOBs. I'm just asking, is there a way with only what I have to make it fit on 1 dvd?

    Aagh! :)

Yes, but nero says it will take up approx. 6.5GB and my DVD holds only 4.7. Can i compress teh VOBs somehow?

That folder you printed can be used by Nero to burn to blank media :)

Right, but it won't fit. That's my question, can the VOBs be resized to fit?

    No worries, download Shrink -

Open it and select "Open files" give it your VIDEO_TS folder, it loves that stuff - it will gobble it up & spit out your perfect 4.464 DVD - and if you follow my other post and have Nero on your PC - well, Shrink will burn your disc "automatically"

    Fancy that -

Sorry, wasn't trying to be mean.

what i'm trying to say is that your original post won't work, because there is no VIDEO_TS.ifo file. The only IFO i have is "armageddon_0.ifo", and if that's renamed to VIDEO_TS.ifo I get an error.

So, Shrink won't work. Any other ideas?

This is the folder - it is VIDEO_TS

    Not VIDEO_TS[bold].ifo[/bold]

    The .ifo doesn't belong !!!

We only want(as I said before) a FOLDER and that folder's name is {bold}VIDEO_TS[/bold] and that's all -

    Here's what I want -

And when I have VIDEO_TS with those files, I get an error.
