it says version 2007 firmware installed on it....problem is my computer won't recognize the usb. the drivers on the disk that came with it are not for this product..(for a web cam and video security) This item was purchased over ebay, as it has ebay power seller written on it and the website on the box is bogus. the mp3 player works and it good enough for her i just need a driver for it (searched the internet and unsure of what to download) to transfer music to it. I am using OS windows XP
    thanks

Chipods are normally defective. They were made for the Chinese market but were rejected. They sell for less than a dollar in bulk. They are Chinese using an Aussie email address, bank account and mailing address. The whole thing is a set up.

Just hit it with a hammer. That is about all you can do.

If you want to get a cheap mp3 player buy a refurbished Sansa.

Some of those junk players actually might come with a keylogger. Not that it was put in the manufacturing process, but there are plenty of rogue employees trying to get some passwords/info.

Only thieves sell them in the first place. They may all have key loggers on them. They know they are dealing with lax, trusting persons. Sheep to be shorn. Try getting your money back from a crook in China after they empty your bank account.

Flog it on fleabay with a cd of "software" containing a usb driver.. hehehe .. then when the buyer says it don't work tell them they must not have installed the software properly.. and start the round of malware/drm nonsense.. hehehe

    Hey scum!

Good to see you weighing in.

The chipods are really a criminal activity. The vendors probably have 3-4 different user names with different bank accounts. They start out selling the mildly defective chipods first in small quanities. Then when they have a few months and a few hundred sells under their belt they sell ones that are completely dead. It takes about a month for ebay to shut them down. In that month they can sell a thousand or more totally useless chipods.

    VERY interesting!!!

A bit off subject but highly informative. I guess I will fully digress...

Scum, if you are still checking this thread, you you know how the file is activated? Is it a file attribute? These kinds of things are good to know. Some virus will just unflag the file. I am sure the OS will resist that but the OS could be fooled.

I have been playing catchup with viruses this week. They were really smacking me around. Some had a recovery thing. Next time you booted back up they were there again. So they lived for one more day before they got the stake through the heart (I hope). Nothing came back from the dead today. I am still pretty worked up. I complained to the virus scanner pcshied. They told me for 350 USDs they would clean my computer and keep in clean for 3 years. I told them if I was to pay anyone it would be the app that found 30 infected files you didn't. I was harboring a zoo and thinking everything was good.

My daughter had one of those on her ipod the last time I charged it. My STUPID software caught that one. I am still cleaning house from all the crap it didn't catch. There are a large number of stealthy viruses out there. The one that got me going attached to Firefox. I am sure it was at least going after passwords if not a full-blown keylogger .

Oh yes I know that one well.. autorun.inf when you open it on a linux cd shows contents pointing to a directory called "resykler" .. or some variant of recycle.. which isn't a directory.. it's a hidden executable installer with system or administrator rights set.

Easy way to get rid of it off the drive is to open the usb device with linux and delete anything like that.. then I used to use mbam and avg to kill the trojan installer it installed.

I have watched people spread the same virus across more than 200 computers and chipods by running an infected system.. they even infected one of my drives which was funny.. because I just looked at this file which had arrived.. and the hidden directory which wasn't and started off ms32.. a sure sign of a virus of some kind..,.. I think people tend to be unaware of it for a time after infection..It doesn't really do anything except spread.. for a while... and then the drive dies and the os goes mental and all kinds of weirdness follows depending on what the writer has loaded the shell with.

I saved a couple of versions of it somewhere.. I don't collect malwae on this machine.. it's on one of my others.

Thanks! I figured you might be able to shed light on this. I will have viruses on the brain for a few days more. Like most other morons I was fat dumb and happy with my infested computer. I really have not been concerned with viruses for 10 years. I do have a scanner but I figured they were not a threat to me. Well, I will take them more seriously for the next few years.

Try ClamWIN .. be very surprised how good it is.. last tests it blew away all the others. I's a bit clunky and very manual.. which is good because it won't just delete all your keygens and cracked xecutables XD

Cheers for this interesting topic.. now I have more idea where people are getting this damn virus from.. and I never suspected chipods.

Oh, you better believe it my fellow citizen, and here's the prove(the player looks almost identical to the one posted by the OP, except for the writing on the face plate;same shape, same features):

Apparently it's not that uncommon.. variants are in these things.

    http://forums.techarena.in/antivirus-software/1095733.htm

I had a dig around because I know 90% of the people who buy these things wouldn't have a clue about disabling autorun system wide or manually busting open an autorun.inf file and changing the attributes to edit and disable it.. sooo..

    http://pc-mat.blogspot.com/2009/04/virus-on-new-mp3-or-usb-stick.html

I followed the links and the advice seems 100% sound.

With my puppy in my pocket it's all academic to me.. and I love to laugh at people running infected systems and blindly using online banking and fleabay and paypal all the time... then moaning to me they want their (commercial shop) system fixed for free.. yet again.. or trying to get me to help their brother (my direct competition) make more money by showing how to clone factory dell hdd's.. not bloody likely.. misinformation and evasiveness all round.. I know exactly how to do that, but I'm not telling a competitor who has already hit 40% of my core customer base. hahaha.

I got my virus from somewhere else. Either a free utility that my scanner did not pick up or the web. I have since discovered, I must have put it on my daughters ipod. When I found the virus on her ipod I had just finished round 1 with my virus battle. That had to be new because my ipod didn't have the virus. We both charge about once a week. I will need to install Sandbox. Hey how safe is Sandbox? My security software didn't want me to install it. I wanted to wait till I could get feed back. I ran 2 scanners on it and it looked OK. I will check it with clamwin. I think I am out of the woods but I am not as confidant as I was a week ago.
