DVP 5960 is USB 2.0, the big difference in these machines is that the DVP 5982 can up-convert to 1080P. Why they would add this & delete the HDMI connection (specs on Philips web site do not show one) is beyond me.

    DVP5982 does have HDMI out.

If you have a 5960 or 5982 & curse the lack of an eject button - keep the 'stop' button depressed a few extra seconds; it will open the tray.

Have a simple hack to make these units Region free if anyone is interested.

I'm interested in a 5982 for the features and cost. I made my Phillips 642 region free through the remote. Can this be done on this unit as well?

Philips DVP 5960-5982 region change instructions.
    1. Turn on the unit
    2. Open the loading tray
    3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
    4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key
    5. Enter 138931
    6. You will now see the current region code displayed
    7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
    8. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
    9. Press "OK" on the remote
    Enjoy all region play back.

Purchased a new 5982 a week ago; it needed a firmware update.

you can buy external harddrive to plug into the tv.

search it on ebay. Not all external hd comes with a hard disk.

Not all external plays all formats.

The External is 50.00 each.. some comes with hard disk and some don't.

To connect a external HD to your Philips DVD player be sure it is FAT32 format; not NTFS; as the machine will not 'see' the NTFS.
