I have some avi files that i want to play on my xbox without modding it. Do i have to convert them to another format before burning them to a dvd?

if you are refering to the xbox dvd playback then all it can read is dvd format dvds I think. In order to play avi files you would need the xbox media center, but that would involve modding. What you can do is use some type of dvd making program like nero or something like it, convert your avi files to window media file, then use nero to make a dvd and nero will re-encode it so it is playable as a dvd. but it must be burnt on a dvd because most xbox drives have issues with cds. hope this could help.
