Grab a 5 1/4" external USB drive container from eBay or amazon, and install a Lite-On iHas124B flashed with burnermax in it.

Best wait till someoene who has actually used burnermax comes along however in the meantime, burnermax is not a flash you are not required to use a liteon ihas as supposedly many unflashed drives are supported as that's what it's for non flashed drives of many makes, before burning or loading imgburn you run the bmax software first the rest is in the read me,apart from verbs discs from singapore

Edit:burner max is the flash not burnermax

Burnermax firmware is written to any compatible or cross flashable drive. The burnermax payload tool is program driven which edits the registry to increase the size of the disk capacity needed for xgd3 format. http://c4evaspeaks.com/ lists flashable/cross flashable drives for burnermax firmware. In this case you will have to dump your bin file then flash to modded ihas(version xxx)firmware. If you go down this route because you have a laptop you will need the burner, sata to usb cable, molex power supply. All can be found on e.bay.Same hardware applies to using the payload tool program unless you can find a internal drive to fit inside your laptop which is compatible with the payload tool program. Here is the list for those drives http://www.ixtreme.net/360-backups/34156-burnermax-payload-tool-compatibility-list.html .Hope this helps.

What ! your post couldn't get anymore confusing!

this thread is not about flashing 360 drives.

Burner Max (used to flash compatible computer dvd burner)
    &
BurnerMax Payload (see link below with comment)

    http://team-xecuter.com/c4es-burnermax-payload-tool-v0-15/

Official release of the BurnerMAX Payload Tool – works with most MTK chipset based DVD burners (Liteon etc)

    - No need to flash burner firmware

No, but this isn't about the payload tool either.
To the OP: either get an old IHAS x28 revision B burner (x being a number between 1 and 5) if you can still get your hands on one of these, they have become pretty rare, or search for a compatible burner to the payload tool and make them external by using a shell. I personally do not know if the payload tool also works with external burners, therefore I'd recommend an IHAS.

"Whats a good external burner" This usually refers to IHAS rev B or compatible drive.Like i said if this is the case it will need to be flashed with Burnermax firmware. So yes it does refer to flashing.

The Payload tool you don't need to flash a drive as long as it shows up the full capacity of the disk being burnt when the program is loaded.Ive given two options plus links as Ive got a laptop (spare ihas 124 plus crossflashed DH-24ABS Philips) setup in the way he needs to.No confusion there i don't think.

I agree, ihas in an external shell is the only way to go, although i remember talk of a drive that would burn full that did not need burnermax, i'm sure a little research would reveal the name!

After reading around the tutorial, which I should of done more at first. I decided to get an enclosure and a internal drive, the Sony Optiarc Plus to be exact. I still appreciate all the suggestion you guys gave and did not mean to waste anyones time. The package arrives from newegg today..... Now comes the hard part i guess, actually trying to burn successfully. Im such a pathetic newbie to this stuff lol. I have alot of reading to do before i get home and get started. Trying to find a Sony Optiarc Plus tutorial for burning.

Edited: Found out the hard way I need a SATA USB adapter not an enclosure.

what is the drive model/version of the sony? If its external then peluynati is also right about the enclosure as its will have sata inbuilt/its own psu then runs via usb. These can range from the 12.7mm enclosures to the laptop slim 9.5mm ones. You can go sata to usb like you said but you will still need to power the drive with a molex psu and a sata to 4 pin molex connector. Also edit your post regards acquiring games as this does sound a little like piracy.

I think you have gotten a Optiarc 5280S-CB-PLUS, that supports overburn (one of the few burners that do so). You need an external shell like this one here:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vantec-NST-...US_Drive_Enclosures_Docks&hash=item589634e303
Maybe you'll find a cheaper one (another possibility would be to get an external Sata HDD enclosure and take that apart to get the connectors, ugly but cheaper).
If you'll get a SATA to USB connector you still need a way to power the drive.
