So, i have spent the last few hours trying to find a customer firmware for the newest ps3 patch 3.73 that doesnt require me to buy a membership or download a bunch of spyware to my computer. All i want to do honestly is play some emulators on my ps3, and i heard that you have to have a jailbroken ps3 to do such.

I am using a slim 120GB ps3 with currently 3.70 on it, and i wanted to update to 3.73 with custom firmware, but i am not finding it that doesnt require the survey crap. Anyone who can help me set up my ps3 to play emulators that would be much appreciated, that is all i want because a lot of the old school games were awesome and i cant afford to buy them all.

djkorn, the only PS3s you can hack to play unsigned code are those on or below firmware 3.55; for those above you will have to downgrade your PS3.

If you are only interested in old school games, eg snes then you can download the PC emulators and play them on your PC.

And 3.7x cfw etc you will read about, especially ones which require membership or surveys or installing dodgy software are all fakes and viruses.

Your only option right now is to via downgrading. For this you will have to buy one of the downgraders, I believe the e3flaher is the user friendly one as it doesnt require soldering I dont think.

Only way to play emulators on a ps3 is via a hacked console.

can you downgrade from 3.7 to 3.55 though using the e3flasher? I am not too worried about going online with it, as i want to be able to backup games and play them off the machine eventually, but i will also have a ps3 that i wont hack into and have that one for online play.

I just thought it would be awesome to play old school SNES and genesis on the PS3, and also have the ability to back up some old ps1 and ps2 games on there and have a huge library of games to choose from.

Yes you can downgrade from any firmware above 3.56 to the latest 3.73 to 3.55 with any of the downgraders.

Note that the cech30 and some cech25 consoles are the new version slims and are NOT downgradable. you will have to check which version ps3 you have.

Note that with a hacked ps3 you WILL NOT have access to PSN, you cannot sign in, you cannot play any of the games online. Best option is as you have stated, buy a 2nd ps3 for official use and one to hack.

Note that only original launch consoles support PS2 games, hacked or not hacked. None of the later phats and all slims CANNOT play ps2 games, hacked or not.

All PS3s can play ps1 games. Hacked consoles can play burned ps1 games on cd, not from hdd.

So as we've said your only option is to downgrade.

I personally wouldn't go through all that hassle just for emulators. The old games have mostly dropped that much in price that for the costs of the downgrader you can get three or four of these old PS3 games. For the emulators (SNES, Megadrive/Genesis, PS1, PS2) I would just connect a PC to the TV (most modern graphics cards support HDMI, if yours doesn't there are addapters for DVI->HDMI) and play these emulated games on the PC. I have done that and can even play Gamecube games at 100% speed with Dolphin 3.0 on a quadcore PC with GeForce 9600 graphics card and 4 GB ram, so emulating the weaker PS2 shouldn't be a problem.

you can build a time machine and travel to the future when the PS5 is out and hopefully by then there will be a CFW for the 3.73

Yeah, that is what im thinking. I have a old school computer controller that i used to use for playing games on the PC. I think im just gonna have to do that, because some of the ps1 games actually glitch at certain parts. What i want to do though is finish FF9, as tit is ruined at disc 3 during the video scene of them in alexandria. So, maybe ill luck out and find a ps3 with 3.55 FW that i can do this with. I have a PSP somewhere that i can also play the emulators on, so i guess ill stick with one of those options.
