i have read many posts on this, but most have been older, and there seems to be new programs and versions.

i don't care how long it takes to copy. i have a 2nd pc i can use just for this. i just want the absolute highest quality video compression possible, when backing up a css encoded video larger than 4.7gb. i have heard dvdshrink to nero, dvd2one, dvdcopy, intervideo dvdcopy, dvdxcopy xpress/platinum are all the best, quality wise, by different people. so many reviews on this board are contradicting that i'm at a loss here. 1 thing i notice with dvdxcopy xpress/platinum is that a good portion of the dvd after completed, is blank/unused - just wasted space. the compression could have been so much less if it used the whole dvd. why is this?

Besides having the best quality, i also would like to have options for deleting unwanted audio tracks, extras, etc, but very detailed, not like dvdxcopy platinum which is very limited.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

    thanks

its a tough thing, highest quality video [bold]compression[/bold] for some dvd-9. Depending on the amount of compression, they are all about equal. If you get 30-40% compression, you can begin to see a difference. All the testing in done on long ass movies with lots of action (much harder on the compression algorithms). My take--they are all fairly similar and it becomes a matter of personal preference.

note: don't hit return/enter when you type and the post will fill the screen appropriately.

interesting. thank you very much. i am currently testing 'the good, the bad, and the ugly' with dvdxcopy xpress and now dvd shrink w/ deep analysis to compare differences. it's a long movie (2hr 41min), so i have to compress it heavily i guess.

thanks for the typing tip, but after i edit the message, it does this automatically, even if i just add a word to the very end of the last line. must be a bug.

wow, i just used dvd shrink 3 beta 5 with deep analysis on this movie and the results are amazing!!!! it blows away dvdxcopy. not even comparable. and you can take out all the unneeded stuff like previews, and audio language tracks. wow.. and i wasted all that time with dvdxcopy!!!

considering the amount of compression i had to use for a movie this long, it's so close to the orig. i have done many ABC comparisons.

i'd have serious doubts if there is an app that can do better compression than dvd shrink v3!!!

The Absolute Best Quality method for Backing up DVD"s is to do it Manually useing a High Quality Mpeg2 encoder Like "CinemaCraft Encoder 2.67" ..A Encoder Like CinemaCraft can Compress the DVD with Much Better Quality than something like DVD-Shrink or DVD2One can because it is a Dedicated encoder and CCE is Probably one of if not the best Mpeg2 encoder on the Market and it should be because they charge $2000 US for it....
This Method Takes Longer than those automated One Button Backup programs and you really Need to have a Good Knowlege of how Digital video works because you Have to basicly rebuild the DVD From Scratch, But there are a Lot of advantages to this method because you can then utilize the Other DVD standards which will allow you to Fit a Lot more Video on a DVD-R..I sometimes use a DVD format called the "Sif format" which allows up to 6-7 hours of Fair Quality Video on each DVD, when useing CCE to encode useing the SIF Format I have gotten 4 Full movies with between VCD and SVCD quality on a Single DVD-R, and useing the Half D1 standard you cam get up to 4.5 hours on a DVD-R or over 2 Fill Movies and when useing the Regular DVD standard useing CCE to encode I have been able to fit 2 Fill movies(or about 3 hours) on a DVD-r with better Quality than DVD2One can compressing One Movie to DVD-R..These methods are Pretty hard to learn if you are not very knowlegeable about this Kind of Stuff but it is worth Learning if you are A total Stickler for Quality Like I am...Cheers

shape: when posting, you dont need to add hardreturns at the end of each line, the formatting takes care of it for you! You just need to add hard returns at the end of the paragraphs and such. :)

And yes, CCE is an excellent choice :)

hi, as i stated above, after i edit the message, it does this automatically, even if i just add a word to the very end of the last line with no 'returns'. it must be a bug.

hmm, this time i just pasted it in, and tried to take out the return spaces, but it still happened.

thanks so much minion for the details. unfortuantely i don't have the time to learn how to do that, or to go thru all those steps every time i do a backup. sounds very complex. regardless i am very happy with shrink and the deep analysis option.

i didn't hit a single return. let's see if my lines get cut off early....

no they didn't, and as i said before, whenever the message is edited, this happens naturally. all i did was hit 'edit message', clicked after the very last character, and hit the space bar once, then saved, and all the lines became broken.

looks like you need to do some 'moderating'; :)
