hey there, i've had a PS2 v1 presumably since they came out a
few years ago, after a few years i got sick of all the disc read
errors and my friends all went out to buy new ones, instead i
had a gander around the net and found that you could open it
up and re-adjust the laser, well that didn't work for me
unfortunately so somewhere along the line i got mad and
smashed up the PS2 :p anyhow now i'm looking into getting a
new one, i've seen the new silver one and the new PStwo, i
was wondering which you suggest i get?
i would like to be able to back up (most, as i know there are a
few exceptions like xenosaga i believe) PS2 games for
personal use of course, just so the laser doesn't get stressed
    out and break again.

i'm a bit sick of being a sony slave and having to buy a new
one, don't want to do it again.

the silver one does look good but i'm not sure if using the
hard drive will work, the main reason i'd liek to get the silver
one is because the PCMCIA type III slot on the back. do the
black ones have this as well? (the newer ones) because i would
prefer to be able to use a wireless card in the future if that is
ever a possibility. on top of that my controller and memory
    cards would match colour :D

anyway what would i need to buy besides the PS2, big HD and
HDA advance 2.0 thingy? is that it? and which PS2 is best?

thanks in advance for your help, did do a big search on the
net and found nothing really directly helpful

    -spence.

Well the new ps2 has a few problems with chips and other means of playing backups and doesnt have proper hdd support, so i would suggest you get a new verion silver ps2 or black one(both the same, v9/v10) a hdd and hdd advance.

It should then last alot longer than your first one because you are going to store games on the hdd so the laser will not get worn out.

so there is no difference between silver and black? that's good to know, i'll go for the thick PS2, save me getting a new stand :) thanks for your help.

so what sort of changes have been made to the PS2 since v1 > v10?

i only know of the cosmetic changes like colour, IR and PCMCIA card

Well the lasers have been changed(different brands of laser) v1 didnt have hdd support i dont think, each version has a different layout of motherboard maybe to try and win over modchips but it will never happen.

V9 and v10 have added i.r and PCMCIA

V11 doesnt have hdd support but is a new slimline design.

Other than that v1-10 hasnt really changed in terms of what you can do with it.

cheers mate, do you ever think we will see all the things sony
almost promised when the PS2 was hyped before it came out,
for instance being able to use it as a computer with your
internet connection, check your mail/picture slideshoes/web
browsing... i know they had the linux kit (and yabasic) and
that photo editing software... but it never really took off, is it
something we can expect in the PS2 or will it just be forgotten
about.. cause windows already has that version of windows
coming out for the XBOX so you can do that sort of thing on
    your TV

Only a few shops will have v10 left.

Try somewhere like asda or a supermarket as they may have some left.

As to your post before, sony are releasing a psx which has built in hdd, video player/recorder and network abilities.

It is out in japan and will be out here early 2005 but it will be about £400-£500.
