    Pruc,

I would guess you have a V4 R but its not guranteed, Like I said its a tough area to judge by serial number since so many came out around that time.
we install the same mod into all versions with most of our no swaps, the only one it would really matter on is a magic 3.6 where you are getting a bios clip, and plan to try and install it yourself.
Let me know If I can be of further assistance

    OK,

Here is one way you may be able to tell mike
ok now this is hard to explain, but easy to do!

flip your unit over, look at the USB ports, ok now with the unit upside down look closely at where the two piesec of plastic form a 90-degree angle with each other,( the vertical front holding the USb ports and the horizontal piece you wouldn't be able to see unless it was upside down.) if it looks like there are two seperate pieces of plastic forming that corner it is probably a version 3 if you have all one piece there it probably version 4. do you get what I'm saying, it sure seemed like a lot of typing for a little point! haha
    Let me know good luck

actually mike it would be that seem all the way across the front of the PS2 so the "blue thingy" :) shouldn't be blocking it!

best 3 versions in my opinion V7 my personal favorite, then V5/6. V7 is the most reliable though!

you know the difference is simply the layout of the board, they are so similar they are basically teh same, they use the same laser and drive assembly and thats the only moving part except the fan which is basically the same for all versions. In short, unless you plan to try and build a PS2 yourself following what sony did, V5/6 are the same!

Some webpages were saying that the laser is different.
