just recieved my wiikey through the post today so thought id whip it apart and get on with chipping it. after looking at a few pics it seems that my board differes from those in the pics a bit.
does this mean that the solder points are elsewhere or is my board not compatible for chipping??

In other words, the wiikey will NOT work with your wii. You should have done a bit of research before you bought it. There is hope though! My buddy who also just bought the wiikey without checking first on his chipset just asked friends, family, and neighbors if they would be willing to swap their wii's with him. He found a neighbor that he told, "I just bought an imported accessory and it isn't compatible with my wii, would you be willing to swap me wii's?" seemed to work for him.
