On the Australian version, A serial LAH1016 or higher indicates cut legs on the chip. It is still possible to mod these consoles, but you need to be an experienced solder(er), as it requires re-making these legs.

You can't really use the serial as a way of telling whether your console is modable or not. The only way to tell is to open it up and take a look.

The most reliable way yo find out what chipset you have is to open the Wii up and look at the chipset itself.

If you have a D2B chipset with legs cut from the chipset you can try soldering to the cut legs or modify the chipset to make it easier to solder to them.

If you have a D2C chipset then you will not be able to Mod the Wii at all.
