While I've soldered stuff before (countless PS1 and Dreamcast modchips back in the day) this Wiikey is kicking my ass, specifically the tight spacing of the solder beads on the Wii drive's circuit board that Wiikey points 3/4/5/6 have to solder to (that row of three beads above two beads). I made a 1st attempt without wire-method and just soldering to board (prob. mistake) and ended up stripping the little solder beads from the Wii's circuit board when I attempted to de-solder two little beads that had become bridged. What I have now is a Wii board missing several of the solder beads and I can't get any new solder or wire to stick to it - they look like little brown holes hole without the beads. I haven't tried flux yet but didn't want to go any further until I got a 2nd opinion how to attach to points 3/4/5/6 on the Wii drive board missing the solder beads.

Good news is I power the Wii up and it still plays Wii Sports okay so apparently I haven't hosed the board totally (yet) :)

    Any advice? much appreciated guys.

had same problem take to pro or pwn shop. Or you could try to solder to the ic legs but i wouldn't recomend since they are so tinyer than the solder points.

If you can take a pic that would be helpful. But it seems like you will definitely need to solder to the legs now since the solder is gone. You can follow the trace if need be. I install modchips also and if you are in the california area you can PM me.

Hello, I took an ohm meter, and tested all 6 points on my chip, they all have a positive connection, and the chi phas power...yet when I try and boot a CD, it still does not recognize the CD...does anyone know of any instances where the chip arrived dead right from factory.

If all of my connections are coming back positice with an ohm meter, and my system powers on great...what else could be the problem, could it strictly be media now?

PS - I checked to see if I have a clone, as far as I can tell I do not, I compared mine to the ones of the wiikey site.

Staverts, do original games work fine? Have you tried the setup disc? What media are you using and what program are you using to burn them?

Original games work great. I am using the newest 1.2 setup disk, and I am using imgburn to burn the setup iso. I tried maxell DVD+R, Maxell DVD-R, an annonymous DVD+RW...but I am open to ANY suggestions, I will do whatever is suggested :)

Wiikey only works with DVD-R, it can also be a DVD+R encoded as DVD-R. If all your connections are fine then yes you might have a dead wiikey. Is there anyway you can take a picture of your install?

I could open it again and take a picture. I will do that and post it tomorrow before I rip out all my hair, curl up into a ball and rock back and forth in the corner. Is there certain brands of DVD-r it will not read?

Thanks, thats awesome, with that I can really make sure that when i get a response with the multimeter, that it is going to the right place, I can follow the trace, but it dosen't hurt to double check it. My eyes are not as good as they used to be.

Well I have f*cked up THREE points and have spent hours trying to solder to the legs on the IC.
There is no way I can do it without causing a short.

1)The legs are too close together for me
    2)My hands shake too much
3)I cant see them and it fries my brain looking / counting them!

What a nightmare. Wish I got someone else to install my mod.

If you put a tiny (microscopic) bit of flux on the tip of a toothpick, and then tap the pads to apply it, and then put a tiny bit of solder on the tip of your soldering gun and tap the pads a couple times, the solder should transfer from the iron to the board and fill in the holes and build a pad again. It takes practice but may be possible to fix your points.

    Cheers for that.
I have found someone who is competant at soldering and has better gear than me.
He reckons he can solder to the IC legs for me.
I'll post when its back !!
