So I'm about to take the plunge and get my Wii modded but first I got to figure out which chip to get. I've done tons of reading on this and have the following pros and cons for each chip:

    Wiikey:
Pro - Tons of features + no external upgrade switch
Con - DevTeam not as quick to update + possible GC problems (?)

    CycloWiz:
Pro - Solid modchip with all the features + solid DevTeam
Con - external upgrade switch that one has to be sure of its status when upgrading

    WiiD:
Pro - All the Wiikey's features and more (?) with great GC support
Con - Can't find too much on it. Awful name. No idea about the DevTeam.

Of course, this is just what I've learned from reading reviews and leaves out some of the more specific details about each chip's features. They're all very comparable in direct boot of multimedia (Wiikey will boot DVD-RWs, though, it claims) and are all a simple install. They also all sport a similar price tag and are all available at mod-chip.com.

So it's up to you, the users of this forum, to help me (and I'm sure others who read this thread) determine what is the overall best modchip out right now for the Wii. Please don't bother posting information about "upcoming" modchips. Feel free to post the specific features if you want, though they're all easily found at mod-chip.com. Try not to offer biased opinions (which can be hard if you own a particular modchip), but instead offer opinions that both evoke the good and the bad of your experience. If there is no bad, so be it.

nice tigrfire i like the idea on this thread...

i also think it would be nice to include a little bit about how easy they each are to install as i think thats quite an important aspect of it all. If a modded (who has installed them all) could please enlighten us about the easy of installation for each of the chips that would be great.

Your assessment of the above chips is fairly accurate, with the current generation of chips they are all largely the same. Personally I ended up going with the Wiikey for the simple fact that its the most popular one out there by far. Not that I am that much of a sheep but it means that if I ever have a problem out the chances someone else has encountered it already and hopefully posted about it go up. When you rely on unofficial support like forums there is a sort of safety in numbers.

I've seen all the chips installed, step by step, at various places online and I'd have to say the Wiikey is actually the easiest to install, while the WiiD is a little bit more difficult (but only because of the chip disable feature wire). Most difficult would be the CycloWiz which could also use a chip disable wire but also an upgradability switch that needs to be mounted to your Wii somewhere (or not if you don't care how it looks).

The Wiinja really isn't a contender anymore in the chip market, in my opinion. It's a chip that doesn't offer the easy solder alternative and, though it boosts quite a few key features, there's no real reason to buy the Wiinja over any of these three chips that offer more with an easier install.

Even tho I have never installed a different chip other then the WiiD. I don't see how there could be much difference in installing any Modchip. They all use the same soldering points on the Wii board to make the Modchip operable.

WiiD does have the wire that needs to be soldered on the reset switch but this is not mandatory for the chip to work. You only need to install this wire if you want to reset the firmware to default or disable the modchip all together.

Another Plus for the WiiD is that it has alternate A/B/C soldering pads. Both for quick solder and wire install. So if you screw 1 up you have an alternate spot to solder to.

I don't know why you guys said the wiinja deluxe is not a comparison. wiinja deluxe are the only modchip out there that had no issue with gamecube, unlike wiikey. The cyclowiz and the wiinja deluxe is the same, they both can be disable, the only different is that the wiinja deluxe doesn't have a switch sticking out, without the hassle of turning on the switch everytime you need a update.

I believe that the WiiD has no issues with Gamecube compatibility and any that it does has is had by all chips due to other issues.

I would say based off of GC compatability alone the wiid is the biggest contender currently. The wiikey works just fine with no issues that I can speak of but I don't play the GC games that some people are having issues with.

I'm for sure going to buy the team xecuter wii chip when it comes out though based solely on the makers. They've earned my trust long ago in the xbox and GC realm

oh yeah, almost forgot. For the love of Pete stay away from the wiinja. I've owned both versions and they are crap crap crap!

i don't understand why you said it crap, when you didn't give a reason why? i know the previous modchip from wiinja are craps, but nothing about the wiinja deluxe. It supposed to be like the cyclowiz but without the switch. Well...im sure it not as crap as wiikey with gamecube issue.

Just to clear this up for sure, isn't the Wiikey GC issue only with a few known GC PAL games? If it is (and since the Wiikey team is supposedly working on an update), doesn't that point kind of become moot?

well, it WILL be moot when the update is released...not until then. but yeah, its mainly a few games with streaming sound, iirc.

don't hope for a updated. They been saying there will be a fixed after 2 week after the wiikey it released, that was like couples of months ago. If it could be fix it shouldn't take this long. They also said there will be a new updated, but that was month ago. Even today still no updated to resolved this. From what i heard from another forum that the wiikey team are breaking up, so it might have somthing to do with the hoax updated, or they can't find a way to fix the gamecube issue and need more time working on it. Since the wiikey is the first modchip to come out with the upgrade feature so the gamecube issue is possibly a bugged in the modchip. If the gamecube issue can be fix it could've been long time ago, it not like it a hard thing if other modchip doesn't have this problem.
