My guess would be that it's not a DVD writer but DVD player and CD writer. I am having a hard time finding anything on that drive on the net. What is the brand and model number of your lap top?

If I'm not mistaken, your drive is a CD burner but only a DVD player. It won't burn blank DVDs. I also think it will only read -R burned dvds. Original store bought movies should not be a problem.

I also read its very picky about the type cds it will burn. It has problems burning high speed blank cds.
