I am trying to install Win 8.1 to Win 8.0 due to a re-install, I am getting a message to install updates, I have upgraded completely, there are no more upgrades available. Still told to install upgrades, re-booted 3x's no good. Help!. T.I.A.

Hi, I'm a newbie but longtime reader here. After doing a factory recovery on my HP envy notebook I'd uninstall the Norton and install my Avast then do updates for both MS and HP then try the 8.1 upgrade from 8.0. After 3-4 unsuccessful tries I did another recovery (may not have had to but I did) then went ahead and uninstalled the Norton AV then enabled the defender instead of using Avast account, ran all updates and then 8.1 installed without a hitch. I'm not so brilliant as many around here but once in a while I get lucky by trial and error. It seems for my case Avast and the 8.1 update had some compatibility issue. Hope that may help if you haven't already had success

thanks ddp, that may actually be why i had tried the upgrade without installing the Avast and it worked, i had read that here as well as a couple other forum threads on other sites

I re-installed again, I am using my own Win 7 disk, none came with the computer. This has always worked in the past. Now after installing my Win 8 disk and trying to download all updates, upon booting, it is showing a message that the downloads did not download correctly and is reverting.Whereas when I try to upgrade to Win 8.1 in Store, get the message that I need to install upgrades. Try again , same thing. Never happened before. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

watch the order of the updates you try to install for the win8. do the Microsoft.net framework last & in order like the 3.5.1 stuff 1st then the 4's the the 4.5.1 last as ran into that problem last week with win7.

Thanks. How do you determine what is being updated? Never had to do that.

Thanks ddp, when I downloaded the program, when I ran it I saw no pop-ups and was asked at the start of the installation for a Win8.1 lic.# Am I missing something somehow?
