When i log onto windows all that appears is my desktop background, nothing else, no icons, no start menu e.t.c.
From here i have to restart my computer with the main power switch.
Usually the second time i log on everything appears and i can use the computer as normal, although sometimes a 3rd log on is needed to use the computer.
    I am using windows xp.
Any ideas why this is happening ?
Thanks for any help in advance.

Hmm, so trying to get to explorer.exe that way won't work...
Have you tried running anti virus, anti spyware scans ?
Have you tried cleaning your system with Ccleaner, and checking your registry with it ?
