Hi, i have a sony vaio pcg-grt100 notebook and i just did a complete reinstall and updated to SP2. however, once i connect my external hard drives it asks for installation disks which i dont have and shouldnt need for xp (home edition). i have never had to do anything other than plug and play before. i have been updating my vaio drivers with no luck. any ideas?

After a fresh installation, you'll need to install the following in this order:

XP SP2 (slipstreamed is the best) (note already done)
Chipset (motherboard drivers - those will include USB support, external drives)
    Direct X
    Video
    Sound
    Firewall
    XP Updates
