I've been looking at the SATA to USB trick to dump keys and read the 0225/0401 drives using JF through VIA chipsets instead of paying for the X360USB pro, but does this trick also allow writing FW to the drive as well? I keep seeing read/dump keys everywhere, but I'm not finding anything on whether or not it works to flash the drive.

Also, I gather that all this method is doing is tricking the drive at power-on to believe that it is connected to SATAII instead of the VIA SATAI ports, bypassing new firmware checks implemented in 0225/0401 (vs no checks for 9504/0227). If this is actually the case, wouldn't it be possible to just power on the drive while connected to a PC with SATAII then just swap it into the VIA SATAI PC?

The X360USB pro seems like it would make things a lot easier (I still have to do the kamikaze "hack/unlock"), but I don't want to spend $60 if I don't need to.

Not sure if that will work but can tell you that you can unlock and write to drive without the x360usb or lizard which everybody thinks are the greatest thing but for me just dont see how . I used my laptop and the mx trident to unlock a 0225 and 0272 so with that said you might try a differnt computer with some built in drivers that might work or if your going to spend 60 then just buy an unlocked 9504 drive and use that then you will have a backup for updates to pop in then return the flashed one after

Lizard is your best bet for dumping via USB. It's $60 for the usb pro but you still need a hit to power it and the drive, so it's the same as the lizard.

I already have a CK3 lite, so I ended up with getting the X360USB pro because I wasn't getting anywhere with this "trick" or any other method around. At least I can also use the usb pro to mod an HDD to use with my slim (it's the 4GB version :p). Thanks for the suggestions.
