Ok so I have an xbox 360 which is around 3 years old, bought it pre-flashed and havn't had a problem with it since. I havn't updated the firmware since I bought it as it has never had a problem playing any game no matter how new.

But just yesterday it started displaying 3 red lights, but not all the time... It only happens occasionally which doesn't seem like a terminal problem, so maybe it is something to do with the power supply as I've read elsewhere? Also sometimes when it does boot up, it loads for a few seconds then there is a faint beep from the console and the picture freezes.

Thanks to anyone that can shed some light on the problem.

i can only say its 1 of 2 things power supply as you have said, i know it sounds dumb but are all cables connected properly, can you try a different set of cables.
and the other is hardware, you say because it occasionly its not terminal, well something could be dying and its letting you know, if someone here can help you more with the hardware prob then take it, but the 3 red lights are more commonly know as the red ring of death RROD, it can be fixed but too tech for me to explain.

hi there thanks for the reply.

I have managed to try another set of cables but still the same problem occurs; sometimes it works but sometimes it doesn't.

I'm thinking of sending it to MS to get repaired as I don't fancy taking it apart and doing it myself, so my question now is, is there any risk to sending a flashed console to MS for the repair? i.e. will they reflash the console or refuse to give it back if they realise if it has been modified?

Why would you even mention the repair kit when he already said he doesn't want to take it apart?

They won't refuse to give it back, but they might refuse to repair it. Also it is out of warranty, so they might charge more for the repair than it's actually worth. Sell the console at ebay (in the description state clearly that you didn't attempt a repair) and buy a used one that is working. Even if you do a RROD repair, you can never be too sure how long it will last.

The excuter kit is nothing more than a glorified x clamp repair kit and does nothing more than $5 worth of bolts and washers can do. It's nothing more than a "band aid". It doesn't repair anything, it only offers a temporary solution.
