Yes, DVD-R and DVD+R play fine on Xbox. I don't think DVD+/-RW will though.

i burned a movie with a 1/o magic 16x dual format, dual layer burner. i used teon dvd+r 8x dvds and it does not play. i have 20 coasters now, what is a godo brand to buy, thats not so expensive, but is guaranteed to work in most dvd players.

    thanks

Taiyo Yuden or Ritek G05 DVD-R are fairly trustworthy if buying from a reputable dealer [I use some of these myself for my crystal clear x-box v1.6b x3 & other Sony and Panasonic home DVD players].

I've never had a problem with Ritek or any brand for that matter. What burning software are you using?
