I've heard of virtual dub and downloaded it but can't seem to locate suitable file for it to try?? Anyone else already invented this wheel? Where am I??

Apart from the AVI --> DVD conversion, did you read http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/129217 ?
I think this is a typical exmple.
More than that, since the quelity of a movie is mainly driven by the quality of the AVI file (which is much less than 4.5 GB; often it's 700-800 MB, for a 2h movie) making a DVD from an AVI is only a loss of time. Better making a simple (couple of) VCD.
Even SVCD is often a loss of time; DVD is even a larger loss of time (and of money).
