Whenever I play an xvid, after a certain amount of time the video starts to play in slow motion
the audio still plays fine but the video only plays certain frames

my cpu utilization while watching the movie is only 20% (athlon xp 2400)
and my ram utilization is only 403mb (out of a gig)

ive installed the newest xvid binaries but still get the problem

    any ideas?

DivX (and XviD) are very video-intensive.
Make sure you have the latest video drivers and DirectX installed.
Try your desktop at 800x600, with no BMP or whatever.
Try 16bit hi-colour, if it works better than truecolour.
You must hope that the AVI was properly made and interleaved.
I can playback AVIs on an old Celeron400 I've got here somewhere, but it is as you describe - after awhile (usually in scenes with tons of action and motion) it will drop some frames.
Once it does that, it has a hell of a time catching up again...
It plays better in a WMP window @ 100% size; fullscreen it and it's tougher, however.
But with XP2400+ you should be good!
Sometimes XviD is not even decoding your playback - if you have ffdshow installed.
Get GSpot and it will tell you which codec is registered to your system for XviD playback.
    Good luck,
