Anyone running a WD Raptor in raid config. for encoding and what is the performance compared to ripping with 7,200 drive. Don't see to much info on this and Hope to get some feedback, thanks all

I use a couple of raptors in RAID 0 and rip plenty of films etc...
I get a drive index speed of 125 MB/s on Sandra 2007 and an access time of 8ms.
This compares to about 60 MB/s on a single SATA2 drive.

I certainly wouldn't go back to anything other than the Raptors now.
I format my PC regularly and the difference in load times is worth the money alone.

I just ran a test on the same DL film which was first stored on a single WD 250KS SATA 2 drive and then on the C:\ drive which consists of my 2 Raptors.
I ran both through Shrink, although I don't use it that often, it has an easy way to see throughput.
It manages a sustained throughput on the single drive of 26,200KB/s
On the RAID 0 Raptors throughput was 39,100KB/s
Quite a difference in ripping speed.

    Hope this helps

Thanks big DK, that will get me to looking for a raptor drive. Was going to look for a deal on a 74G as I will do any storing on slower 250 dive in computer. I presume you xfered your boot and OS to the raptor drive as well and will figure that when time comes. Thanks again and will let you know when installed and first rip!

I use the Raptors as the main drive for everything except storage.
The other good thing about the Raptors is the WD warranty.
They never quibble about sending out replacements if they go down, and as long as you provide your card details you get the new one before sending the old ones back.

I used to use the 74GBs in Raid 0 before the 150s came out, they are actually faster than the 150s in tests, so should get you ripping even faster.

I have had 2 x 74’s go die on me in 2 years, which meant I lost everything that wasn't backed up. Probably heat related as my old case a Thermaltake Xaser 3 was built like a bomb shelter but airflow was pretty crap.

I now keep the 2x Raptors in a 4 in 3 device module which pulls air through a 12cm fan over just those 2 drives.

8 x 12 cm fans fitted altogether which keeps the air moving nicely.

Let me know how you get on, you won’t regret getting them, even though it seems hard to justify the extra cost when buying them at first.
