Does that mean it would improve the picture quality? (even though its a pirate copy. That's if i were to download one i the first place)

    Improved? Compared to what?
Results of upscaling depend entirely upon the equipment used...
some of the chipsets do a better job than others.

Why don't you try it and let us know?

I think i'm getting confused about what upscaling actually does (means).
I have a Philips DVP5980/12 and was told that if i were to d/load a movie from the internet (torrent, which may not be of great quality) and put it into my DVD player, the DVD player would upscale it to 1080, therefore improving the picture and sound quality...I could understand that if i had purchased an original DVD from a shop but would it do that with a pirate copy?
To settle an argument. Is that what upscaling does?(supposed to do)
I did come across a movie (torrent)once that was d/loaded from the internet somewhere.(the quality was surprisingly good) I played it in my DVD player, the quality certainly didn't get any better, and in actual fact i would say that the quality was slightly better viewed on my lcd 15' pc monitor, as apposed to a 37'lcd tv.
Thanks Anyway, at least i will have learnt something!

You're right. Generally an upscaling DVD player is one that
converts the picture to 1080(i), with the output through
    DVI/HDMI/component.

However, most of the big screen TV's also have this capability.
Whether the TV does the upscaling or the DVD player the result should
be similar, as far as I'm aware.
