Sony introduces 1TB PlayStation 'Ultimate Player' console

Sony has introduced a 1TB 'Ultimate Player' edition console today, launching in Europe on July 15th.
"Offering twice the storage of the existing PS4, you'll be able to download more of the games you love to your PS4, extend your play with more great add-on content and save and share even more of your best gaming highlights," says Sony.

In addition to the larger capacity PS4, the company also noted that its 500GB design will now be 10 percent lighter and 8 percent more power efficient. Finally, the console will replace the glossy top with a matte finish, which will likely show less scratches and fingerprints.

So in other words...if you have the money to buy the unnecessary massive increase in the HDD cap, and then invest much more into the games to occupy said space, then Sony has just what you need. This is an effort to fix recent slump sales I'm guessing.

They advertise this thing like it's a breakthrough when it surely isn't. This will soon be the norm and the price of the existing console I imagine.

Personally, I'd guess it's more that Sony is trying to capture a few of the dollars that are currently bypassing them, when people mod their PS4s' HDs. Pretty much ANY change in ANY product, especially if even remotely construable as a positive thing, is nearly always hyped into the ground by any company, ya know...

I haven't had a 500gb hdd in my pc for years, hard drives are so cheap I dont understand why the launch console didn't just have a terrabyte at minimum.

Because they're specced and designed literally years before release.
