Burn most of my backups from the hard drive - Iso Files Noticed that there are companion files for each ISO - called movies title 001- Example = Gone with the wind Iso , Gone with the wind 001 . My question is if theese files are'nt needed can I delete them & reclaim space on the drive ? thanks !

If you're using a FAT32 file system the ISOs are divided into chunks not exceeding 4GB (usually 3.99GB). The MDS files provide info about layer breaks, etc. There will be 3 files for most DV DVDs: 1 MDS file and 2 ISO files labeled .I01 and .I00. Is this what you have? You need all these files for backing up. Once the backup is completed, all three files can be deleted of course. If you use a NTFS files system, there will be a single ISO file with the extension ISO and one MDS file with the extension MDS.

I don't know if we're talking the same file here - The one I'm taking about has the same movie title / name as the iso file but says 001 file like - Chicken little 001, I suppose it does'nt matter too much ! I'll just burn them to some Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims and put those away for safety copies . Then delete the Iso & the 001 files ! altogether ! Just thought if I did'nt actually need the 001 files I could delete them & pick up space for a few more Iso's & delay my HDD clean up for a short while . But I do thank you for such a speedy reply Thanx again !

Were those downloaded files that were extracted to a single ISO? If so, they wouldn't be necessary once the ISO was created.

Without seeing what you started with and ended with I don't think I can figure out the process. Mount the ISO with a virtual drive (Nero Image Drive, Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120%) and see if it plays. If it's just single-layer size all the other files can be deleted if it plays OK. If it's dual layer in size, there may be a mds companion file. If so, that file needs to stay with the iso file. The others can go.

It could be the case you have duplicate iso files and the OS is naming the duplicate 001.
