Hey, yeah, sorry ive been asking the same question over and over is just that i keep learning new stuff and eevrything i learn makes me ask the same question in a diffrent way. So apprently, the ps3 games and console support 1080i (i have a 1080i tv, but not a 1080p). But I asked someone from the geek squad and told me that even if i have a 1080i tv, all i would be able to do is receive the 1080i signal from the console, but actually display it in 720i. So i told him well wtf i would rather put it in 720p than in 720i. So mynew question is, with my sony wega (480i/p 720i/p 1080i, would i be able to USE my 1080i using a HDMI cable, or will my tv just create a fake image of 1080i, thus bringing it down to 720i.

I really wannna buy a ps3 but i want to know what i will be able to do with it considering i dont have the best tv ever.

Earlier and future help much appreciated

The PS3 has a nice settings > video display option from its startup menu. There you can choose various resolutions and "test" them. So you see a list that looks like

    480i (standard)
    720i
    720p
    1080i
    1080p

Select one of them and click test. If your tv supports that resolution it will say so and ask if youd like to set it to that. If your tv doesnt, after 30seconds it will flicker back to standard resolution and you can pick another.

Not really sure what the heck the geek squad guy is talking about. If your tv supports 1080i, then you can set the ps3's resolution to 1080i as long as you use the HDMI output.

I use 1080i for Fight Night on a relatively cheap projection tv (52" Hitachi was only like $1000) and the picture is really quite amazing, much better than i was expecting.

Blah sorry for double post :(

Check the back of the game and see what resolution it will play in.
Also make sure you TV supports 1080p or 1080i. Like samshizze wrote you can test the resolution in the display setting of the PS3. If your TV does not support a certain resolution it will flicker or go back to what resolution it was set to originally. Also if you want to play a game that supports 1080i or 1080p, in the display option of the PS3 uncheck the 720p box. Ninja Gaiden Sigma can be played up to 1080i and 1080p but if you do not uncheck the 720p box it will select 720p as the default resolution when you play. I am assuming this has to be done for all games that supports 1080i and 1080p.

720i does exist its just rare to even hear about but if i were u set it to all the resolutions supported by your tv now while in xmb u will be running 1080i but most games are supported at 720p so it will adjust resolution as u go in game im not one to argue with geek squad but he made a confusing statment u should have no problem at 1080i
