As the title says. What is the difference between a traditional DVD rip and the DVD-R that is sometimes released?
DVD-R : is a recordable disc (purchased blank, single sided with 4.7 Gb of blank recordable space) DVD-rip : is usually a term that torrent uploaders use to tell people that the data was taken off a commercially made DVD
DVDR .... could have been recorded to a dvr's harddrive. Example might be a show on Sci-Fi channel that a person recorded to harddrive then upped the file to a torrent site. Technically thought, iluvendo is quite correct, DVD-R = blank media intended for dvd burners DVD RIP = Copying a dvd's media to a computer.
