1693S owners.Quick ????

Was thinking about getting this drive,but I don't see any reference to cables or anything.Would I have to buy them seperate? Thanks

I did before i made this post. I don't see any online retailers that list the contents,audio cable,ide,etc as part of it.

Thanks for the pics.I see the audio cable but not an IDE. Are there any differences between the IDE cables?would anything work?? Thanks

With newer burners, use a new 80 wire - 40 pin cable. Older burners uses 40 wire - 40 pin cables, but newer buners use Ultra DMA Mode 4 transfer mode. I don't think that you will get that transfer mode with the 40 wire cable, but I could be wrong.

 

So I would need a 80 wire 40 pin?

BTW, the 80 wire 40 pin cable is the same kind that is, or should be, connecting your hard drive to the motherboard

 

I'm assuming that there is another cable slot for the dvd burner that I am going to install on the motherboard?

 

There should be. The Primary IDE connection, on the motherboard, is usually blue, and the Secondary Ide connection is white, I think.

You want to set it up as the primary drive on the secondary connection, if nothing is there, now. If there is something on that connection, depending on what is there, you will want to keep your new drive as the primary, and set the jumper on whatever is there, to slave.

 

I looked a little bit at your motherboard and from what I can see you got a primary IDE connector (the blue at the bottom) and a secondary IDE connector (the black one in the middle). That means you should be able to connect like 4 drives. From my experience drives usually dont come with the IDE cables; those are supplied along with the motherboard.

Now about that drive, I just bought one last week and it works very well. I have a really old computer (like over 3 years old) and my cables are like 40 wires but still works with no problem in UDMA mode. I can burn DVDs at 8x without a problem. Though if I would be to buy a new cable I would buy the 80 wire cable.

Mine is setup on the same cable as the my old CD burner. The main thing is to try and put it on a different cable from the harddrive; because when you burn DVDs the computer needs to read from the harddrive and write to the DVD burner, thus having them on different cables makes sure they will both run at max speed (this is just put in a simple way).

Open up your computer and look at how many cables you have. Also what drives do you have connected to your computer ?

Just to sum it up: I would buy the drive, the cabling shouldn't be a big deal. In the worst case you can just set up your dvd burner instead of the old cd drive, or just buy a new cable from best buy or whatever.

 

The only drive hooked up now is the DL DVD/CD writer(don't know brand or model #) that came with the system. I was just going to get a dvd-rom to take some of the strees off the writer when playing a dvd,but then decided if the writer that came with the system was junk,I would need another one.I'm away on a business trip now,so I can't open the case to see the cables.I won't be back for a week.You think that there may be an extra IDE plug form the mb already there? Hi, I'am also considering this device however, would you know if this will work on my older system (Pentium III - 1GHz, 512MB RAM, 64MB Video)?

Heys guys,do you think that since the pc isn't even a yr old that it may already have the 80 wire/40 pin with an extra one to use?The only place that has that cable has it for $25.00:0 I have an Athlon 64 3200+(2.2ghz)and a gig of ram.I think i'm ok??

 

I get back into town Friday.Think I'll get the drive and check the wires when I get home.If it is a 40 wire then I'll run out and get an 80 wire. One more think,if the wire is a 40/40,can I get a 80/40 with a dual plugs and hook them up them as a master and slave eventhough the original one was hooked to a 40/40?
