hey guys, just wanted some thoughts/input on my potential 1st build. this is just for everyday computing-nothing too taxing.im going to be buying components over the next 3 months as i can afford them, which i know isnt ideal when dealing with the computer industry but its the only way i can currently do it. heres the list: case CPU fan RAM MOBO PSU HDD DVD i realize that board doesnt have onboard video so can someone recommend a card? not gaming or anything-just need video(i'll be using my tv as a monitor if that helps).also,ive read that its a good idea to have a small HDD to boot from so any thoughts/info on that would be appreciated.i already have a tube of artic silver so am i missing anything(besides OS,keyboard/mouse)? does this seem like a decent 1st build?
Looks good enough to me; I have an i5-750 and it's a very good processor. That case seems to have pretty decent airflow already, but I would recommend this CoolerMaster heatsink instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065 Something that might be noteworthy, the RAM you're looking at doesn't match the speed(s) listed on the motherboard spec page, but I'm not sure if that would actually be an issue. All excellent choices. I'm not amazed by the CPU cooler, I personally think that you would be better off either spending more for a true overclocking cooler, or just sticking with the stock cooler. Aftermarket coolers aren't needed unless you're going for big overclocks. The powercolor card there I believe is non-reference which could be troublesome. It is also far more than you need spend if you're not gaming. This is what I'd buy: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102877 Nice and cheap, and ample to run basic programs. If you want awesome loading performance, then I'd heartily recommend buying one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167025 They may not hold much, but install windows and your critical applications to one of these and they'll load ludicrously fast. It used to take my PC 2-3 minutes to load everything on my PC once I'd logged in. My X25-V does it in 8 seconds.
Not that I disagree with your advice, but the stock cooler than comes with the i5 is a bit pathetic. Just out of interest, what does "non-reference" refer to in this instance (that's not my specific card afaik, but am curious to know)? I also forgot to mention RE the SSD. It's not a "small HDD" persé; like Sam linked, they're SSD which all come in reasonably small capacity, but they are different hardware to say a 40GB HDD - just as clarification incase you weren't aware.
It looks pathetic, but it really isn't. It's capable of cooling the CPU even with a mild overclock applied. Non-reference refers to any card not designed/built by ATI, i.e. anything with a different PCB/cooler to the standard reference design.
thanks for the input guys-exactly what i was hoping for. ripper, i must have missed that about the RAM. so im assuming id be better off saving a few bucks and getting the 1333 sticks correct? sam, could you recommend a decent overclock cooler? not sure i even need to OC but knowing me, i will be tempted. also, would it be worth the extra $15 to upgrade to the i5 760? edit: found a 760 for less than a 750 so thats a no-brainer lol
If you save a few bucks getting 1333 then sure. When I check 1600 is usually the same price (for 2GB modules at least). The i5 760 is barely any faster than the 750, unless you're either not overclocking, or extreme overclocking, it won't make much difference. If it's no extra cost like it has been here, by all means, but if it's extra money it's not worth much. As for an overclocking cooler, I like the Thermalright Venomous X, expensive though it is.
