I just purchased these two items: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817146063 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822153012 and the problem is that the coolmax enclosure wont read the harddrive. I installed it correctly (this is not my first 2.5 external hdd), and the computer detects the harddrive. It says that it is installed and ready to use, but now drive is popping up in "my computer". I dont think that the harddrive is to big for the enclosure, its only 40gb and most enclosures maxes out at 40gb. I could not find out what this enclosure's max compatibility is, so i hope that this is not the problem. It is not the enclosure that is broken, because i put a different harddrive in the coolmax enclosure and it works. And i tried the Fujitsu hdd in another enclosure and it does not work. So it is definitly the hdd The harddrive is a ATA-6 and the coolmax enclosure is a IDE ATA 100. I dont know what the 100 stands for, but i dont think that is the problem. any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a gift for my girlfriend and i really want this to work.
ata-6 means that ata-6 type drives can go over 137gig. does the drive show up in my computer or no? did you partition & format the drive?
No the drive does not show up in "My Computer", but it does show up in device manager under disc drives
Well ya have to format it for it to show up under my computer. Go to control panel, adminstrative tools, computer management. Now click disk management and there should be ya hard drive. Unless its classified as removable storage. Either way right click the drive and left click format, Ya done. Now walk away from the keyboard for botu a half hr depending on the speed of ya comp and ya good to go. It will probally be classified as removable storage since its in a housing, but not sure. Never used a external hard drive before.:> Btw the way why did ya waste ya money on a slow notebooke hard drive? Even if ya hooking it up to a lap top you still could have put a 7200 rpm or 10000 rpm drive with no ill effects for the laptop. This drive ya got is supposed to be used inside of the laptop.
well thanks for the help, it worked like a charm. This external harddrive is for my gf, not for me. she just wants something where she can store her projects in. She is in landscape architech and works with autocad, and a normal jump drive is to small for her and i dont want her to carry around a bulky 3.5 hdd. This is fine for her, she doesnt need anything fancy. But i understand what you are saying.
Well ya very welcome. Ob btw best buy has a deal going on a seagate 120 gig 8 mb cache hard drive ide....39.99 after instant rebate. Ya might want to run over and grab one or two....then ya can give her 2 or 3 enclosures for xmas..lol!:>
