Well i need some advice on what to do. I ordered a new HD(and some other things) for the new computer im building. I have everything inside my case and now just recently put in the HD. I wanted to know when i put the HD im currently using on this comp, and the new one, into my new case, will i need to install a OS on the other HD that is new? I was talking to some guy at Fry's Electronics and he said there is a way to use one OS for both HD's. I always thought there was something on it that binded it to your mother board or something.... i'm just guessing now :S. So will i have to install a new OS onto my new hd when i install it?
if new hd is being used for data & not for windows than no need to load windows on it. just need to partition & format the hd so it can be seen by windows properly. read this link tho for seagate it still applies to other manufacturers. http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/howto/install_xp_disk_mgmt.html
hey i was wondering can you get 2 hardrives and combine them to make one hardrive seen by windows meaning more space
I've been running two hard drives for years, keeping all of my important stuff on the second drive, and the operating system on the primary drive, my reasoning is that in case of a virus or boot sector corruption, the second drive should survive an attack, and the first can be wiped clean and reinstall windows and I'm good to go. However I do back up important things onto DVD disks and store them away from the computer in case of loss of computer and or fire in the house.
to glitchzoo yeah u can its called raid the motherboard has to support raid thats all u need u could add them like this: ex 2 80gb = 1 160gb hd ex 2 80gb = 1 80gb hd(they r mirrored so if u writte something to one the other 1 gets written with the same data) this is mostly used in servers with critical data so if 1 hard drive fails u still have another 1
ok i dont mean the server thing where you make an egzact copy i mean can you combine one 160 gb hardrive (serial) and one 250gb hardrive (serial) and combine them into one hardrive so you have a total of 410 gb? and also by one hardrive i mean 2 plugged into the motherboard but the computer only see's a drive c:\
That link is for all RAID setups imaginable. And btw, RAID isn't just used for servers. What you want to do is also described in that wiki, if only you take the time to properly read it, you'll figure out how to do it or where to find additional info.
yes glitchzoo! u can do that i have a 80gb and 160gb hd and i raid them it shows 224gb now ok? to The_Fiend i know raid doesnt always work like that there lots of combinations from raid0 up to raid7 i was just posting the most common combinations of raid
erm ... hmmm... ok then i have another question: i have one serial hardrive (which windows is installed on) and one ati hardrive. when i start windows using the serial hardrive i notice that after a while drive f:\ (the ati one) seems to dissapear and i cant find out why :'(. but if i keep an folder open from drive f:\ windows seems to reconise it until i close the folder. i have also checked that the wires arnt loose and ther arnt so can anybody help me out here or is this unfixable.
