Have had dvdx copy platinum for several years now and it has worked almost flawlessly. I have tried a number of times to back up episodes 17-20 of 24 season 3. Thought I would try again and continue to get an "error reading sectors message". All others back up just fine. I know this has been a problem for others and was wondering if someone had figured out an answer to the problem. Thanks for your help.
probably either one of two things: 1) Encryption. DVD Decrypter or anydvd will get by it. DVD43 might as well. X Copy will not. 2) Disc is scratched, dirty, or defective. Try to clean it, watch it just to make sure it's not messed up (although just because you can watch it doesn't necessarily mean you can rip it).
Hi there tburgolf welcome to aD, Whenever 1-click "wonder programs" try and read an episodel disc they usually see either the largest file there thinking it's the "Main Movie" OR they read the first program there again thinking all the rest are extras. You can get "Lucky" when backing up the "Entire Disc" and get them all BUT many times, it just won't "do it". Remember that even in it's very best day, XCopy couldn't copy every disc. Any rate, You need a solution don't you ? The solution is to use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. First, create a folder for DVD Decrypter somewhere you will be able to find it. I put mine on my Desktop calling it, "ALL MY DVD WORK" then create another folder with the name I'm using for the project, i.e. "The worst marriage in the History of the World". To begin, "open" DVD Decrypter, select Mode ~> ISO ~> Read in DVD Decrypter then for "Source," go to wherever your original files reside either your DVD drive OR your HD. For "Destination", point to the folder you just created and then click on the "Disc / Hard drive icon" to activate DVD Decrypter. When it has finished it's job, "open" DVD Shrink, go to "File" ~> Open Disc Image, Browse until you see the folder you backed up / ripped the ISO image too, allow DVD Shrink to Analyze the image then compress it if necessary then burn to disc in an ISO image using DVD Decrypter OR CopyToDVD.When you work with an ISO image you are getting all of the files, every nuance, the way they were on the original in the exact order they began. Therefore, all of those happy, unforgettable episodes are there with the menu selections just as they began, now on a brand new disc for you to treasure, reminding you always of how incredibly stupid you were AND that you can never live it down, making you once again, an ""idiot" and "clown""in the eyes of your x-wife and the world. Now you can re-live those moments, even when your friends are not around to remind you constantly of them. What good friends they are, (Now, where did I put that gun ?). Cheers, Pete
Will dvdxcopy express software effect my abilitly to use Decrypter & Shrink? It seems I tried to use these programs before and could not figure out exactly how to use it. I will give it another shot and see what happens. The great part of dvdxcopy express is that it will back up 99.9% of dvds. It is these one or 2 times I can't and it drives me crazy. Thanks to both of you for your advise.
I used to use the same burning software as you and was happy with until I discovered AD. This guide set me straight -> http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/reccomended.html and have since found ScubaPete's --> http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/tutorial007.html I was about to purchase AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 until I found these wonderful guides. They are easy to follow and if a nOOb like me can figure them out, anyone can. I've had wonderful success and zero problems backing up my DVDs since. I still have XCopy installed along with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter and there are no conflicts. Thanks bbmayo and ScubaPete!
Ribbit-I finally got around to using the info you provided to me a while back and I thank you for that. I got an I/O error when downloading movie using Dvd Encryptor. Does anyone know how I work around this? Thanks
tburgolf, You have me confused. You say you got an I/O error when downloading. A little information on an I/O error: An I/O error deals with a disc 99% of the time and the other 1% of the time it is from the drive itself having nothing at all to do with downloading. Also DVD Decrypter is a ripping proggy and has no use in downloading whatsoever. An I/O error is usually received when attempting to burn to a crappy piece of media. Using a decent quality media will eliminate this error. An I/O error can also be seen when trying to rip a damaged or faulty OR a downright dirty or scratched DVD disc. Clean the disc, attempt to recover the disc using CDCheck. http://www.elpros.si/CDCheck/ Finally, if indeed it comes from your drive, sometimes just a laser lens cleaning with either canned air OR a Laser cleaning disc will solve the problem. All that said and done, you may have to check the burner / DVD ROM in another machine to sea if it is at fault. Very rare BUT possible. Cheers,
To ScubaPete Have tried to follow your great instructions on using Decryptor and Shrink. Here is my new question. I have anyDVD running and you indicated that anyDVD can handle 100% of all encrypted DVD's. Shouldn't I be able to use this software with Dvdexpress and burn this episode of 24? I have been using express for a couple of years now and have been able to backup virtually every disc I have tried. The only problems I have experienced are backing up a couple of the episodes of 24 and the Sopranos and now I am having problems with Beyond the Sea. Can you provide any input that might help me with these issues? Thanks for your help.
Further to scubaPete. I went back and tried again to back up a Sopranos dvd and thought things were going well. When I went to burn I got a message saying the disc was too small for the data. It gave me the option to continue anyway and I did. At the 57% mark I got an I/O error saying ScsiStatusxo2 Interpatation:Check condition CDB:2A 00 00 23 05 04 00 00 20 00 Interpatation:Write (10) Sectors: 2295104-2295135 There is also another string of numbers. I am afraid this whole thing is way over my head. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Now you can re-live those moments, even when your friends are not around to remind you constantly of them. What good friends they are, (Now, where did I put that gun ?). Ooopps, Sorry, I was remembering an episodel DVD shot by my next-door neighbor. Yea, what a friend he was, . . . . .( now, where DID I put that gun,) . . . . . NOTES on the serious side: Though ISO's get everything on a disc, in their exact order, working with them is processor intensive. That means if you have less than 512MB of RAM, you might wish to consider going into "msconfig" ~ "Startup" tab and click "Disable all" to free up 100% of all your resources. Also, you should allow your PC to work alone, allow it to use all of its available resources so that the job can be done without incidence. Attempting to use your PC for other tasks could lead to a system "lock up." This is not dangerous in the least but, it is annoying. Once again, allow your PC to do what it was designed to do. Remember, your PC isn't a car, you won't "Blow it up" by having it do processor intensive work. Cheers and, enjoy your backup. Pete
To ScubaPete-I guess I am still missing the point as I have followed your instructions again but continue to get error mentioned in my earlier post. I am told the disc is too small for the data. I have compressed it best I could using one of your earlier posts where you go into great detail. This method takes about 3 times as long as when I use Express and only once was I able to back up a disc that I could not earlier do with Express. I think there are just some discs that can't be backed up those who are computer challenged. Thanks for your help
Have attempted to try and back up 24 Season 3 using instructions for dvd encryptor and shrink. Have tried to follow ScubaPete's detailed directions. At about 97% and got the following error. Can someone give me some direction as to what to do to correct this problem? I/O error Device:[1:1:O] Lite-on DVDRW LDW-4115I202 (F(ATA) Scsi Status:OX02 Interpretation:Check condition CDB:2A 00 00 21 4C 00 00 20 00 Interpatation:Write(10)-Sectors: 21822090-2182271 Sense area: 70 00 03 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 0C 00 00 00 00 OC Interpretation:Write error Have been using Express for a couple of years now and really only have problems on episodic disks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hi tburgolf, Here are some "tricks" for working with discs that give you an I/O error. You continue to say you are getting an I/O error whether you are downloading a movie OR ripping one from a disc (I finally re-read all of your posts, word for word). Since you are getting one from a download I can only deduce that your drive has something wrong with it's laser. Perhaps it is only dirty. Try cleaning it with a laser cleaning disc (when is the last time you cleaned it ?) OR some canned air. Not as good as the disc but better than allowing it to remain dirty (Lol). Remember what I said about it being media, I don't believe I covered the correct media for burning DVD work - it is of major importance. Using the wrong media can result in I/O errors all day long. Just so we understand each other, ~ Using poor media doesn't mean you cannot burn DVD's it means that the quality isn't constant and so you'll have batches of discs that will give you errors OR coasters. Memorex is a great example, 90% of Memorex is Mfgred by CMC and is total crap BUT 10% of Memorex is made by Ritek and is damn fine stuff. The odds are against you getting that 10% so I recommend against it all together. Reason: 9 out of 10 batches are a lousy quality media. (FYI, Some of the Memorex 25-pack are made by Ritek all the other packages are not.) Always use a decent grade media. I suggest something like those discs made by Taiyo Yuden, Ritek, Mitsubishii or RICOH. Unfortunately they are also the discs most plagued by pirate Mfgrs. and for that reason I like dealing with Mertline, Supermediastore OR Newegg who have a great return policy on their products. I have had great luck with Sony, Phillips, TDK, HP, Maxell +R (not the -R, they cannot be trusted), Fuji +R are fine But -R are not, Ritek, RiData, Verbatim DataLife and, Verbatim DataLife Plus discs are dependable and their prices are extremely reasonable. As a passing note, when buying Verbatim's, they come with a lifetime warrantee. Return them with your sales slip OR register receipt and a new one will be shipped to replace it. For the best online media stores to shop, try - Mertline.com http://meritline.com/ Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-132-344&depa=0 This very rarely happens But when it does, use DVD Shrink and engage all of the quality settings (Deep Analysis & Quality enhancement, Maximum Sharpness) and backup the resulting file to your HD. When that is complete, pickup those compressed files with DVD Shrink, "Open Files" and run them through DVD Shrink once again (you won't have to use any quality settings as you've done that already) and burn to disc. By doing it this way you can backup a DVD twice the size of any commercial DVD ever made ) Heh, heh, that's because it is 3X the quality than Xpress. Think of it as you would of anything cheap, the lack of quality will always result in a faster processing time. and Finally, All that says, as I've stated to you before, you have been incredibly lucky, even when XCopy was being made and had a staff of techs at your beck and call, there still were DVD's that XCopy couldn't copy. In its best day, it wasn't that good and here we are, several years later, . . . . It isn't like fine wine, it doesn't get better with age. At least you weren't like some of the more brain dead pple, paying $149.99 for a proggy that hasn't been made for 2 years. Like you, I bought XCopy when it was in business thinking how great it was, and it was pretty good, it was only when it let me down on 1 too many DVD's and I switched to something else that I realized what superior quality was really all about. Like I said, I walked in your shoes, I know all too well Back to business, Change media and clean your drives laser. If you continue, try hooking your drive to another PC (maybe a friends) and sea if the problem continues. Though I consider it unlikely, there's always the remote possibility your drive is on the way out. Let's give the above a shot and report back, OK ? Cheers, Pete
Pete-Thanks again for the info. I had some TDK dvd blanks laying around. I tried one of those and guess what I was able to burn a clean copy. I really appreciate the heads up on the dvds. I have been using name brands and thought they were all the same- so now I have learned something new. One other question. I have a Lite-on burner which supposedly burns at 4x. I noticed most of the dvds show 8X write speeds. Do I need discs that are only 4X? The guys at Best Buy says there are no problems using the 8s. Any thoughts? Thanks again for your help. Timm
Hi Timm, The speed of the discs doesn't mean anything just set your writing speed to 4X. You might find that buying 4X discs are cheaper. Remember to keep the speed down and you'll do fine. Cheers, Pete
