3 gigs of RAM reading at 1

    i have a dell dimension e521 its two years old i think,

    and i have the following setup in my ram slots

    One Gig chip ddr2
    512mb ddr2
    One gig chip ddr2
    512mb ddr2

    ive tried many combinations with the above, but it always reads at either 512 or a gig...

    any ideas?

    check the online manual, maybe your computer can only support a certain amount. Also place the RAM in order, the manual should describe the order, normally its Slot 1 = highest... to Slot 4 = Lowest.

    Try one at a time to make sure they all work.
    Maybe certain brands don't work well with the others.

    A quick Google shows that your machine will take up to 4 gigs. Make sure all of the memory is the same speed. You need PC2-6400.
