Hi I just bought a 300GB Maxtor 3200 USB hard drive. Problem is that i can only format it to 279 GB. I know it's common that you never get the full specification space but 21GB is one heck of alot of missing space. It's currently formatted as NTFS. Windows does not let me format it to FAT32, any tool that can do this and wil this solve my problem? TO reduce slack i will now format it with smaller cluster size, does this cause any disadvantages? Please help. THanks in advance.
I think i've figured it out. Not technical at all.. just marketing BS. Maxtor says 1000 bytes = 1 kilobyte and 1000K = megabyte etc etc when actually its 1042 bytes= 1 kilobyte since its a binary system based on powers of 2. So...: I figure that for all HD's the actual space is 93% of the label since: 1000*1000*1000/(1024*1024*1024)=0.93 And just as i expected 93 % of 300 is 279 GB. Hope this'll help someone else aswell.
