Is there anyway you can take a compressed 4.7gb dvd back to 8.5gb with any software ? if so will it bring it back to its Original quality Thanks Daza
No. The data is no longer there. When a movie is "compressed", data is thrown away to make the file smaller. That is why I never backed up using compression to fit a DVD9 original onto one 4.7GB disk. I split a backup over two disks rather than loose quality. The use of the word compressed is deceiving. In physics, high pressure will reduce the space taken up by matter but it's mass is unaffected. But data (electricity or magnetic charge) has almost no mass, and certainly, no pressure is being applied to it by software or hardware. It's just zeros and ones. Marketing people invented the use of the word "compress", in the context of shrinking to single disk backups, because it would be hard to sell compression software if you described the process as erosion or deterioration. There are some pretty sophisticated products whose compression logic makes good choices of what data to throw away and what data to keep. Many don't consider the loss of quality as important as getting the movie on one disk. And many don't have HDTV home entertainment systems so they are actually unaware of a loss in quality compared to the original. Works better, but not without loss of quality, with audio though. Hence Dolby's success in the DVD market. DTS does not compress it's soundtrack and has a more "brilliant" clarity of sound than Dolby but DTS takes more data space. That is why DTS is less available on DVD movies ... how could the studios fit all their previews of coming attractions, ads and warning notices and other junk otherwise. The only way to not loose quality but still fit more data into the same space would be a program that utilizes more efficient use storage cluster capacity. But the gain in space with image files would be small. Sound would yeald a bit more gain. But you have the originals right? Just recopy them onto DL. Best regards, Whisperer
